Animal Protection Officers will be triaging calls and responding to emergencies tomorrow. Their response capabilities will be affected by road conditions and call volume, but if you are concerned about a pet please call 311 to make a report.

These tips can help make sure your pet is safe during a winter storm:

🐾 Bring them inside. Even though they have fur, pets are still at risk of hypothermia in freezing weather. Longer furred breeds like huskies and Great Pyrenees may have a higher tolerance for cold weather but no pet should be left outside for long periods during freezing temperatures.

🐾 Keep walks short. Shorter-haired dogs are going to get cold faster, and elderly dogs may have problems walking on the ice. Check their paws to make sure balls of ice haven’t formed between their toes.

🐾 Provide shelter. If you’re unable to bring your pet inside, make sure they have adequate shelter. The shelter should be up off the ground if possible and the door should face away from the wind. Provide thick, dry bedding and replace it regularly if it gets wet. Do not use space heaters or heat lamps due to fire risk, and don’t use heating pads as they can burn your pet’s skin. Remember that the Safe Outdoor Dogs Act passed recently which requires outdoor dogs to have access to fresh drinking water (so make sure it’s not frozen by changing it out regularly) as well as shelter that they can stand up in and turn around comfortably.

🐾 Recognize a pet in distress. Signs of hypothermia in pets include shivering, lethargy, weakness, and shallow breathing. Frostbite can also be a risk for ears and tails; signs of frostbite include red, swollen areas or pale, white areas. Consult your veterinarian if you are concerned your pet may be hypothermic or have frostbite.

🐾 Thump your car hood before starting the engine. Sometimes cats take cover in engine compartments and can get seriously injured and/or transported away from their home. By hitting the hood of your car, it gives them a chance to get out safely.

DID YOU HEAR THAT STARTING RIGHT NOW “ALL” ADOPTIONS AT OUR ANIMAL CARE CENTER ARE FREE FOR THE ENTIRE YEAR

Thanks to an amazing partnership with several of our local businesses, starting right now all adoptions at the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office Animal Care Center are FREE!!

That’s right, thanks to A.J. Hiers of Boniface-Hiers Automotive, Scott Glover, Bill Orndorf, and Ed Flanagan of Glover Orndorf & Flanagan Wealth Management, and Shawn Beck of Jack’s Wrecker Service, every dog and cat adoption from our Animal Care Center is now FREE!! Included with the free adoption is free microchipping, all vaccinations, county license fees, a free wellness exam at one of our local veterinarian partners, and 30 days of free pet medical insurance for your brand new family pet!!

While I know that some get concerned over the concept of free adoptions, I want to reassure everyone that this new initiative in no way changes our protocols or policies for vetting potential adopters, as our primary goal is to make sure that each pet finds a SAFE and HAPPY “furever” home in our community!!

So starting right now when you visit our Animal Care Center to adopt a dog or cat, our team will review the adoption packet completed by the potential adopter and then once approved, you and your family’s brand new pet can head to the local Pet Store where you can use the money you saved on adoption and microchipping fees to buy them food, toys, and treats to help make their new home the best ever!!

You know I always say that “it takes a community to protect a community” and this new initiative that is being fully funded by A.J. Hiers of Boniface-Hiers Automotive, Scott Glover, Bill Orndorf, and Ed Flanagan of Glover Orndorf & Flanagan Wealth Management, and Shawn Beck of Jack’s Wrecker Service is a perfect example of just how true that statement is!!

Please join me in thanking them for their very generous donation of over $10,000.00
to help make sure that every homeless pet in our community finds a “Furever” home!!

Hello Facebonkers.
I wonder if you could do me a favour? Whenever you hear that someone is planning to get a cat or a dog, try to persuade them to adopt instead of buying from a breeder. There are so many beautiful, unlucky and forever-grateful pets who have been abandoned and deserve a good home. Never buy from a pet shop and always at least check out your local rescue centre. I bet you’ll fall in love. Thanks.

Hospice Foster wanted!

Ron is a 7 year old cutie who we rescued from Texas after the blizzards in February...he's the last dog from that bunch left. He is a quiet boy who loves nothing more than to cuddle up in his bed or take short walks with his little orange hippo toy. That thing is never out of his sight! 🦛

Unfortunately, Ron has TVT, which is a type of transplantable tumor that will likely shorten his life. It is also contagious to other dogs, so Ron must be the only dog in the home.

We would love to get Ron into a hospice home where he can soak up all the love for whatever time he has left! While he is in hospice, we provide all of his medical care, food, etc, all we ask is that the family loves him. For more information, or to meet Ron, visit 6035 Sisson Road in Titusville.
