⚠️ PSA for Jog Pup Clients:
Even Good Dogs Eat Things They Shouldn’t
Last year, Jog Pup HQ’s Lyle somehow ate so much mulch that he needed surgery to remove it. We immediately removed all mulch from our property so it couldn’t happen again.
This year, at 5 years old, he decided to eat a washcloth we keep around the house for our bloodhound Bings drool. We never saw it happen.
It ended up partially lodged in his stomach and completely blocking a large portion of his small intestine, requiring major emergency surgery and an extremely large incision. After a few long and scary days, he is finally home and resting.
It was a reminder that even well supervised dogs can swallow things you’d never expect.
Signs of a blockage can include:
• Repeated vomiting
• Loss of appetite
• Lethargy
• Straining to p**p or inability to p**p
• Abdominal pain or hunched posture
• Restlessness or whining
• Excessive drooling
• Diarrhea or very small stools
If you notice these signs, call your vet immediately. Blockages can become life threatening very quickly.
Just a reminder to keep an eye on anything your dog could swallow including socks, toys, washcloths, mulch, sticks, and more. Even dogs that have never done it before can decide to try something new.
We are incredibly grateful to the staff and doctors at Premier Veterinary Care. Some even came in on their day off to help save Lyle and personally transport him to Animal Specialty & Emergency Center of Brevard for overnight care. Thank you as well to their amazing team of doctors and staff who took such great care of him.
