FACTS MATTER

Anti-hunter cat ladies are destroying wildlife in Africa, and Botswana showed exactly how it happens. In 2014, Botswana suspended trophy hunting after pressure to replace it with photographic tourism. But many remote hunting areas could not simply become profitable safari destinations. Research found that rural communities lost jobs, meat, income and funding for social programs, while resentment toward wildlife and reports of poaching increased.

When wildlife stopped providing benefits, local people were still left dealing with crop damage, livestock losses and dangerous animals. Human-wildlife conflict increased, and Botswana eventually lifted the ban in 2019. Anti-hunters may feel good demanding bans from thousands of miles away, but the people living beside these animals understand the truth. Regulated hunting gives wildlife economic value, funds conservation and gives local communities a reason to protect it.

First win in Oregon 👍

Huge win for hunters: Oregon’s proposed hunting and fishing ban is officially dead for 2026. The PEACE Act fell nearly 13,000 valid signatures short of qualifying for the November ballot. It would have removed long-standing exemptions from Oregon’s animal-cruelty laws and effectively outlawed hunting, fishing, trapping and many normal farming practices.

But remember, this is their goal, it is not their only path to get there. State by state, and law by law, anti-hunting activists will keep trying to take one species, one season and one method at a time until there is nothing left. Hunters stopped the full attack in Oregon, but we cannot ignore the smaller ones happening everywhere else.

Under the Biden administration, Martha Williams ran the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and said it wanted to “embed DEI principles and actions into everything” the agency did. Every employee was required to attend a live two-hour annual DEI course, managers were judged partly through DEI standards, and officials held weekly meetings to track DEI assignments and progress. This became an agency-wide mission.

The agency also spent staff time developing an LGBTQ website, chosen-name changes for personnel and travel systems, and guidance for restrooms and other facilities. Every dollar and work hour devoted to that bureaucracy was a dollar or hour not spent restoring habitat, fighting invasive species, studying EHD or improving hunting and fishing access.

The agency held weekly accountability meetings to push more DEI into the agency. Where were the weekly accountability meetings for disappearing caribou, struggling moose populations or declining grouse habitat or how to handle EHD? The Fish and Wildlife Service exists to protect fish and wildlife, not operate as a social-policy agency. Its employees and managers should be judged by healthier habitat, stronger wildlife populations and sound science not by how many DEI meetings, trainings and internal programs they completed.

Trump did eliminate these policies but most of the people responsible for implementing them are still working for the agency. We must learn from the mistakes of the past and make sure this never happens again.

Lock him up, obviously he didn’t learn his lesson!

A hunter already banned for life after a major Idaho poaching case has now been charged again. This time over one of Utah’s most famous mule deer. Karl Studer is accused of illegally killing two trophy animals in 2023, including a giant Oak Creek buck that was publicly celebrated and displayed as a legendary Utah deer.

Three men connected to Alpha Outfitters were also charged for allegedly helping him. Prosecutors say the group’s other alleged violations included illegal trail cameras, unauthorized hunting methods and using a vehicle or aircraft while pursuing wildlife.

Studer previously pleaded guilty to illegally killing a bull moose in Idaho, paid more than $180,000 and lost his Idaho hunting privileges for life. These new Utah charges have not yet resulted in convictions, but the case could become one of the biggest outfitter-related poaching stories in the West.
