WAKE UP COLORADO

03/10/2026

The goalposts keep moving — and Colorado ranchers are paying the price.

CPW has already approved over $700,000 in wolf depredation claims for 2025 alone — more than double the annual fund allocation — with costs expected to surpass $1 million. And now, the same advocacy groups that championed the compensation program during the Proposition 114 stakeholder process are filing coordinated citizen petitions to gut it.

Why the reversal? They can’t allow “negative” stories about wolves to exist in the public space, even when those stories are documented truth.

This is the pattern. The citizen petition process has been weaponized by well-coordinated, out-of-state-connected animal rights organizations running campaigns from the top down. Nineteen organizations don’t file a petition together by accident.

After last week’s commission meeting, we have to ask: will CPW’s own science-based recommendations even matter going forward when some commissioners appear to favor activist emotional pleas over the judgment of their own wildlife professionals?

Colorado’s wildlife belongs to all Coloradans — not to organizations willing to say whatever it takes to get what they want, then change their position the moment the facts become inconvenient.

Rachel Gabel of the Gazette says it plainly: someone is lying.
Either Samantha Miller of the Center for Biological Diversity put words in the Governor’s mouth when she claimed his office directed activists to show up — or Governor Polis himself is letting his own agency’s expertise be steamrolled by ideology.
Either way, the CPW Commission — packed with Polis appointees — ignored their own CPW staff, their own attorneys, their own stakeholders, and even their brand-new director to advance this fur ban into rulemaking. One commissioner openly admitted they didn’t even know what they were voting on.
This isn’t science. This isn’t transparency. This is chaos in the name of activism.
Mark Viera and CPW staff showed up with data, research, and years of expertise. The Commission sent them back to the drawing board to appease out-of-state animal rights groups.
The fight isn’t over. Rulemaking is next — and we’ll be calling on you all to unite the fight once again. https://gazette.com/2026/03/09/fur-ban-petition-approved-despite-confusion-and-chaos-rachel-gabel/
