Devastating to read. Our hearts are breaking for Marion's Shelter Staff.
And we beg people to please be responsible - don't support puppy mills and backyard breeders.
Don't adopt a dog if you're not fully committed, because returning the dog doesn't hurt you but will break the poor pup.
Getting rid of a dog because you changed your lifestyle, because you are expecting a baby, because you feel bad they sleep all day...why get a dog in the first place?
They're living creatures, not gigapets or tamagotchis.
We said goodbye to Carmella yesterday.
Carmella was only a few months old when she arrived at the pound as a “stray”. She was someone’s bright, shiny new puppy. What happened? Did her owner dump her? Did she wander off? Didn’t anyone miss her?
Over the next year and a half, Carmella took part in three trial adoptions, but none were the right fit, though we appreciate each and every adopter for giving her a chance. Each time Carmella returned to the pound, the light inside her dimmed a little more, but we made her promise to hang on, and told her that the next home would be “the one”.
We sent her to receive a week-long training evaluation and for the first time in a long time, we felt optimistic… but returning to the pound caused Carmella to lose herself… and this time was different. The constant stress and fear and uncertainty took such a toll on her to the point where we didn’t recognize her anymore…
To watch a puppy grow up in a kennel and slowly lose their mind is an unimaginable pain. Carmella’s story began and ended at the dog pound, and we mourn for the life she never got to live. She lived at the pound for 471 days. She deserved better than what this life gave her. She wasn’t an easy dog, but she was a good dog. We hope her heart is finally at peace and she knows we did our best to save her.
PLEASE spay and neuter your dogs, and be sure to give them an extra big hug today.
We know how upsetting this is but we want to remain transparent with our community. If Carmella’s story made an impact on you, please come out and volunteer, foster, or adopt. The dogs need you.
Note: The Marion County Dog Pound takes euthanasia very seriously and the decision is never made lightly. We do not euthanize for time, space, or breed. We euthanize only for serious illness/injury, court mandate, or in Carmella’s case, aggression/biting/kennel craziness.
