Dr. Kelly Slattery (Pennington), VMD, owner of Home & Shore Vet, has always felt a special bond with animals and aspired to be a veterinarian almost her whole life (since 2nd grade!) Caring for the pets that people love over the years has brought her much joy and gratitude. In 2020, she decided to form her own business to offer veterinary care in the comfort of the home during the times when pets need it most. Dr. Slattery is a lifelong resident of Delaware County. She attended Marple Newtown High School, then went on to attend college at the University of Pennsylvania. She received a Master’s degree from Drexel University before attending University of Pennsylvania’s School of Veterinary Medicine and graduating in 2010. She calls another place home as well, the town of Ocean City, New Jersey. Her parents were homeowners throughout her childhood, and her own family has a second home on the island. She began offering house calls for the pets of Ocean City in the summer of 2021. She has her own loving (and sometimes chaotic!) “zoo” at home, she and her husband have three young children, two dogs, a senior kitty, and two hermit crabs. When she is not caring for her family or pets, she enjoys reading and scheming to redecorate.

This summer will look a little different for Home & Shore Vet. With family commitments, availability for visits will be more limited from June-August, and will be prioritized for end of life care visits. Availability at the shore will be delayed until after the 4th of July, and given the early start to the school year, will end in mid-late August before Labor Day.

Please always reach out, and if Dr. Kelly cannot assist herself, she will share referral information for other local in-home veterinarians and hospitals, to allow your pet to receive the best care they need and deserve 🐾

When I started my house call practice five years ago, I knew that I wanted to have a large focus on offering the service that is closest to my heart, in-home euthanasia. Being blessed and lucky to have grown up with dogs, I have in turn experienced the loss of three family pets, and also as an adult have said goodbye to my first incredible dog and two loyal and loving cats. It truly doesn’t get easier, as they are all so unique in their personalities, their bond with us, and also in their decline and death. What we can hope to offer them at the end of their life, is the gift to pass on as peacefully as possible, and ideally in the comfort of home. They can be surrounded by love, telling stories of what made them so special, or silly, or mischievous. They can often be fed ice cream, peanut butter, steak, or whatever else they want, and be wherever they want (couch, favorite bed, spot inside or outside in the sun). It really can be a beautiful, magical thing to send them off this way. In choosing euthanasia on their behalf, we are not shortening their life, we are shortening their decline, struggle and death, and freeing them. It is the hardest decision to think about making, but is a decision that we must remember is always made out of love for the pets that are our constant and faithful companions 🐾❤️

FIP has been a fatal feline disease for which we had no treatment for decades.

Through the combined effort of veterinarians, researchers and cat owners, there are now approved and successful treatment options available 🐾

An antiviral therapy is effective at treating cats with feline infectious peritonitis, a deadly disease caused by feline coronaviruses.

This adorable purple kitty was a gift from one of my clients, and is now riding along with me to house calls in my cup holder! The back story is that this family reached out to me to schedule euthanasia for their senior, overweight cat after he was diagnosed with severe hip arthritis and an acute ACL tear at an emergency hospital. While I completely understood the concerns about his quality of life moving forward and supported this reasoning, I suggested a consult first to evaluate him and determine if we could add more pain control and give him a few more weeks of rest before making a final decision. Almost a year later and here we are, with me stopping by monthly to administer an injection to help manage his arthritis ❤️

Here’s my buddy Sam, who I have seen at home for over two years to help manage his arthritis and occasional skin issues. He loves laying outside, which is where his house call visits usually take place. Not always a fan of photoshoots though! 😆🐾

What dog smiles when they have to wear an ear wrap? My girl Roxy, that’s who! She is rocking this bandeau bikini-esque look on her head because of an aural hematoma we are trying to help go down (an annoying but generally harmless issue of the ear flap). She is one of my OCNJ “regulars” and is always the best girl for me ❤️🐾
