If your dog seems to forget you exist the moment you step outside, you’re not alone.
The outdoors is full of smells, sounds, movement, and exciting things happening all at once. That’s a lot for a dog’s brain to process, especially when they’re still learning how to focus around distractions.
A few ways to help your dog succeed:
• Practice engagement before the walk really begins (like in your driveway or yard)
• Reward check-ins when your dog looks back at you
• Keep early walks short and successful rather than long and overwhelming
• Reinforce behaviors like slowing down, responding to their name, or choosing to stay connected
Focus outside doesn’t appear overnight. It’s something we build gradually through consistent reinforcement and practice.
And remember — walks don’t need to be perfect to be productive.
