If your dog seems to forget you exist the moment you step outside, you’re not alone.

The outdoors is full of smells, sounds, movement, and exciting things happening all at once. That’s a lot for a dog’s brain to process, especially when they’re still learning how to focus around distractions.

A few ways to help your dog succeed:

• Practice engagement before the walk really begins (like in your driveway or yard)
• Reward check-ins when your dog looks back at you
• Keep early walks short and successful rather than long and overwhelming
• Reinforce behaviors like slowing down, responding to their name, or choosing to stay connected

Focus outside doesn’t appear overnight. It’s something we build gradually through consistent reinforcement and practice.

And remember — walks don’t need to be perfect to be productive.

If you’re desperate to get out with your Ashland puppy, but walks feel stressful…
you’re not alone.

When your puppy feels “all over the place,” it’s usually not stubbornness — it’s excitement, overwhelm, and a brain still learning how to handle the outside world.

There is a way to make walks feel easier:
• Start in lower-distraction spaces
• Reward calm and check-ins
• Keep outings short and successful
• Build skills before expecting consistency

You don’t have to figure this out by yourself.

👉 If this sounds familiar, reach out — we’re happy to help you and your puppy find your rhythm.

We love seeing dogs and their guardians succeed together.

⭐ “The Joy of Wagging is the BEST! Mariah is such a patient and kind trainer! And we love their treats and snuffle mats and all their other toys!!!!”

Our training approach focuses on building clear communication, confidence, and joyful learning experiences.

Many dogs we work with are learning everyday skills like:

🐾 Reliable recall
🐾 Loose leash walking
🐾 Calm focus in busy environments

And we make learning fun by using high-value Joy of Wagging training treats and enrichment tools like snuffle mats.

Because when dogs enjoy training, they learn faster — and life with them becomes even more rewarding.

Sometimes the best training you can do for your puppy…
is sitting still and letting the world go by.

It might not look like “training,” but it’s teaching your puppy how to:
• Observe without reacting
• Stay regulated around new sights and sounds
• Build confidence in unfamiliar environments
• Learn that the world doesn’t always require a response

These quiet moments help puppies process instead of overwhelm — and that foundation carries over into walks, outings, and everyday life.

Training isn’t always about doing more.
Sometimes it’s about giving your puppy the space to learn how to be.

Dogs experience the world through their noses.

That’s why enrichment tools like snuffle mats and snuffle balls are such a powerful part of training. Sniffing is an essential mental exercise for dogs and can be as exhausting as physical activity. While it doesn’t work the physical body, experts say that 15-20 minutes of intense sniffing offers mental stimulation equivalent to a one-hour walk. It lowers the heart rate, eases stress, and releases dopamine.

Real training doesn’t always look flashy.
It looks like rewarding calm, practicing in low-distraction spaces, and building skills before things get hard.

Those quiet reps are what help puppies:
• Stay connected outside
• Handle distractions without spiraling
• Settle instead of overreact
• Succeed in busy environments later

Boring now = easier walks, outings, and adventures later.
