Last but certainly not least, thank you to our 2023 buyers of our MASS market steers: Bob's Dairy Supply, Brute Force, Comstock Seamless Aluminum Rain Gutters, Forward Bank, Freudenthal Manufacturing, Gowey Abstract & Title Co., Kanes Construction, Medford Cooperative, Inc., Nestle, Niemuth Implement, River Country Co-op, and Timberline Trucking.

These steers are beef breeds, or crossbreds with beef and dairy genetics. Raising a steer is a big commitment. With weigh-in in December, youth care for and keep records on their steers for over twice as long as pigs and lambs. Along with providing correct nutrition, youth frequently clean and groom their beef steers promote the hair growth to achieve the signature "fluffy" steer look. Great job to all our past and present beef steer exhibitors!

Whether you call it a pig, hog or swine, it all means delicious bacon! Thank you to our 2023 buyers of MASS market hogs: AbbyBank, Black River Diamond Company, County Line Excavating, Forward Insurance, Huotari Construction, Jogeti Plastic Decorating, Labrador Woodworks, Mahr Brothers, McMillan Electric, Medford Cooperative, Inc., Medford Motors Inc., Nestle, Niemuth Implement, Peterson Concrete, Prochnow Transport Inc., Sierra Pacific Windows, Spooner Mills of Thorp, Weather Shield Windows & Doors, Westaby Trucking, Wheelers Chevrolet Medford, and Worden Trucking.

Pigs have been our most popular species for a long time, although beef is getting close. While pigs grow readily on quality feed, the challenge is selecting a young feeder pig with the structure and muscle a judge will look for, then feeding and exercising it correctly to finish in the required weight range for the fair. Like the other species, pigs need to be trained to walk in the ring. Daily walks are essential for muscle and stamina. Great job to all our past and present MASS hog members!

Today we are recognizing the buyers of the dairy steers in our 2023 MASS sale. Thank you to Bob's Dairy Supply, Gilman Corner Store, Gilman Feed Company, Medford Cooperative, Inc. and Medford Motors Inc.

In the MASS program, dairy steers are breeds traditionally raised for milk, but they make very good beef when fed properly! Last year we have Holstein and Brown Swiss steers in our sale, but we've also had Jersey and Milking Shorthorn steers. Raising a dairy steer requires different nutrition than a traditional beef steer and we applaud these kids for their success.

As we get ready for the 2024 MASS Sale one week from today, we want to give one more shout out to our 2023 buyers. We're starting with the lambs. Thank you Black River Diamond Company, Forward Bank, Nicolet Bank, Pinter's Packing Plant, Prochnow Transport Inc. and Weather Shield Windows & Doors for supporting our MASS members who sold lambs in the 2023 sale!

People often comment how cute lambs are. They are also a challenge to raise and, unlike pigs and cattle, are fed to have only 0.1-0.2” of fat cover in the finished product while maximizing muscle. Lambs also gain slower and showing them is a physical workout! Congratulations to all our past and present lamb MASS members on a job well done.

We’re gearing up for our 2024 beef show! Last year we brought in about 120 head from 70+ exhibitors to the fairgrounds in Medford. This is an opportunity for our local kids to compete and learn with some of the best cattle and experienced showmen in the Midwest. Proceeds support our MASS kids and the Taylor County Market Animal Sale. This is our only fundraiser. If you are interested in helping to sponsor the show or donating an item for the silent auction, please reach out!

We've been quiet on here, but we've been busy behind the scenes planning the 2024 show! We are seeking sponsors for junior showmanship t-shirts, pee-wee showmanship, the Friday night educational clinic, and ring sponsors.

Find sponsor info in our Google folder or email us at [email protected] for details! https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1uvCtXHJNWzFvgofCKv2PaExOe12qpMwh?usp=sharing
