FIV is not an issue.
Recently we've had a handful of issues with people receiving outdated information regarding FIV+ cats and we want to put that to rest. So we're going to do that by introducing you to Sasha!
Sasha is about 1 year old and came into the rescue with her three kittens, who have all since been adopted. Sasha is currently an adoptable panther in the cat lounge at House of Black Cat Magic where she shares space with 11 other cats. Sasha is FIV+
Let's go through some True/ False statements about FIV together in an effort to continue to dispel misinformation about FIV+ cats.
Sasha shouldn't be in the cat lounge because FIV is extremely contagious- FALSE ❌
As an FIV+ cat, Sasha will have a shorter lifespan than FIV- cats- FALSE ❌
FIV is short for Feline Immunodeficiency Virus and does not typically cause any direct symptoms. FIV compromises a cat's immune system, making them more susceptible to secondary illnesses such as colds & infections- TRUE ✅
As an FIV+ cat, Sasha is sick and will have a low quality of life- FALSE ❌
As an FIV+ cat, Sasha should be kept indoors for her own safety and in an effort to keep her from transmitting FIV to aggressive or feral cats that may fight her outdoors- TRUE ✅
Sasha can only spread her FIV to other adult cats through deep, blood-drawing bite wounds and cannot casually spread through allogrooming, sharing food or water bowls, litter boxes, etc- TRUE ✅
FIV+ cats should be euthanized- FALSE ❌
The American Veterinary community generally supports FIV+ and FIV- cats living together in a stable, indoor home where neither cat is aggressive and everyone is fixed- TRUE ✅
Sasha's kittens could also test positive for FIV after being exposed to the virus in-utero- TRUE ✅
In most cases, young kittens that test positive for FIV may only be showing positive because of antibodies received from mom and may not even have FIV. Because of this, some shelters and rescues do not even test kittens for FIV until they're at least 6 months of age- TRUE ✅
Sasha will need medication to manage her FIV throughout her life- FALSE ❌
It's not a good idea to ask your veterinarian if they stay updated on new studies and information regarding FIV+ cats- FALSE ❌
As long as Sasha is non-aggressive and given ample time to assimilate with the other cats in the lounge or her new home, there is not a risk of transmission- TRUE ✅
Sasha, and other FIV+ cats, deserve loving homes with other feline friends- TRUE ✅
Sasha is a healthy cat with a big personality and an even bigger heart! She is talkative and friendly with other cats and is still waiting for her furever home. We hope that Sasha has helped to spread awareness about the stigma against FIV+ cats and that animal welfare organizations will continue to inform rescues, veterinary staff, & shelters about this seriously misunderstood diagnosis.
