Upper Allen Dog Park Friends

Upper Allen Dog Park Friends We are here to support and promote the off-leash dog park in Upper Allen Township of Mechanicsburg, P We will soon begin construction!

In the fall of 2013, Upper Allen Township developed a survey to determine if there was much interest in developing a dog park in our community and the results were highly in favor of it. A committee was then established to move forward with the initiative. We have been working hard on researching grants and other funding sources, visiting other dog parks, and determining where in our township to p

ut this park. On September 20th Upper Allen Township and Daybreak Church signed a lease agreement with Daybreak Church leasing land to the township for the dog park. We have done a lot of the work already but will need additional volunteers to help us finish this in time. Please contact us through Facebook or by contacting the township if you would like to help.

🏴‍☠️There was a major mower breakdown with leakage of hydraulic fluid into the grass today (7/28) in the large dog section. Out of caution for the dogs, the section is closed. The parks department will open the other large dog section as soon as possible. Thanks for your understanding and patience!

Alert! Alert! Alert! It has been posted
for months about removing water bowls when you leave the park. Tomorrow, bowls that are left will be removed. It is a health and sanitary issue. It also is clutter. There is no reason folks cant take their bowls with them when they leave.

New feature: Dog of the Month!

The first featured dog from the Upper Allen Dog Park at Daybreak is Eva.

Eva is a 1-year-old Rhodesian Ridgeback, also known as the African Lion Dog. The Rhodesian Ridgeback's distinguishing feature is the ridge of hair running along its back in the opposite direction from the rest of its coat. It consists of a fan-like area formed by two whorls of hair and tapers from immediately behind the shoulders down to the level of the hips.
Rhodesian Ridgebacks are known for their stamina and agility. Eva thrives on regular vigorous exercise like long walks or jogs. Trips to the dog park offer her playtime and sociallization opportunities.
When Eva is not hunting lions, she lives with her big sister Mia, also a Rhodesian Ridgeback, and her mom, Lisa Diamond.

Folks, we're still seeing people let their dogs out of the car off leash. I know they run for the gate and they're well behaved. But dogs are funny about who they like. Out of nowhere, you can have an issue and if they're off=lead, you have no control. Our dog was nipped a couple of months ago. There are reasons for each of these rules. We've had very few incidents but if a dog attacks another dog and causes injury and the police are called, the Township will deactivate the entry fob and refund the registration fee. That protocol is posted in the info board at the front of the park. Again, I find it remarkable that we have so very few incidents. The park is heavily used and the dogs are having a great time. So please leash
h your dog until you're in the kiosk entry. Thanks!

I've been involved with our Dog Park since the beginning. I am normally not political but the support of staff and the Commissioners at that time was remarkable. It is by far, according to the folks Ripken, Carmen and I speak with at the park, the best dog park in the area. We have a Township election coming up. So I will only give you a couple of facts on this because it's an important election for all our parks. Jason Saposnek has been on the Park and Recreation Advisory Board for years. He registered their dog and goes regularly. Jim Cochran was instrumental in getting this park built as a Commissioner. He also puts his money where his mouth is. Outside the entrance gate are the Gold Bones of major sponsors. The Cochrans have FIVE consecutive years of sponsorship for our park. So no bashing of other candidate but just giving credit where credit is due. I support both Jason and Jim not for what they say, but for they done. Republican ticket for the Upper Allen Twp primary May 20. Paid for by Ripken, the black pug who runs our house. Thank you. Jeff Williams

Friends, just a gentle reminder to clean up after your dog and please don't let in unregistered dogs! It's for our animals' safety that vaccinations are up to date and verified by your vet. there are no 'guest' visits but we do have Open Houses that allow this.

The one complaint we hear all the time is folks who do not police their dogs. Because we're such a social group, when we visit the park we can get occupied in conversations with other owners and miss seeing their dog doing its business. Help out by pointing it out if the owner misses it. And thank you to the folks who clean up messes even if it isn't your pup p**p. There are plenty of doggie waste bags so grab one every time you enter your area. It's spring and the park looks wonderful!

Thank you Parks staff! The monthly Park and Recreation Advisory Board meeting is tonight (4/23 at the Township building if you wish to share any thoughts. These meetings are now live streamed on the Township web site. uatwp.org. They are available for later viewing as well. Thank you for our recent sponsors. The "Gold Bone" signs have been placed at the kiosk entrance for Mermaid Car Wash and Jim and Karen Cochran who have sponsored every year since 2021.

This Saturday and Sunday, April 5th and 6th, the Park will have an Open House. The gate will be unlocked in the evening of April 4th and remain open for the weekend. If you have friends who want to see if their dog enjoys the dog park experience, this is your chance! The dogs attending this have not been registered or have confirmation from their vet that they are up to date on their shots. However, during the year Open Houses will be held so the public can experience the dog park.

Thank you to the folks that came to Wednesday night's annual meeting. There are currently 280 dogs registered. Several suggestions were made which will be discussed and passed along to the Township.

REMINDER! The annual meeting for the Dog Park Committee is this coming Wednesday, March 12 at 6:30pm in the Township building. All are welcome! This is your chance to share suggestions, provide input and hear reports from the Committee. The Dog Park Committee is a sub-committee of the Park and Recreation Advisory Board and formed with volunteer dog owners who live in our Township, a liaison from the Park and Rec Board, and representatives from Daybreak Church.
Do you have friends who may be interested in registering their dog? Please feel free to invite them along. There have been many friendships made at the park both with owners and our pups. Your comments are valuable and the Commissioners listen to what we have to say. I know they are proud of this park and the constant use it receives. A new lease has been signed with Daybreak Church that extends the park use until 2045!! See you Wednesday!!
