An update on all things dog park after attending last night's meeting of the Lower Allen Recreation & Parks Board.... The new registration cards are being sent out this week, so some people have them, some don't. This is strictly a public safety issue, to make sure that dogs using the park have proper vaccines and are following state license laws. If you don't want to register your dog, you can still walk your leashed dog elsewhere in Community Park, but don't use the dog park. There are still hiccups in the card system to work out, For example, if your household needs more than one card because different people bring the dog to the park, or if a dogsitter needs a card for your dog. But Helen (the LA staffer who has done a heroic amount of work getting this all up and running) is happy to work with you to fix these sort of issues. Just give her a call..... You will have to have the card validated by Helen annually. She knows that her work hours aren't always convenient for everyone else to stop by her office, but she's amenable to having some times when she's at the park with her laptop and can take registrations and validate cards onsite..... Township employees will soon begin random checks for registration cards. If you don't have a card, you'll be asked to leave. (Personal note: be nice to the park employees. They work hard, they're just doing their jobs, and taking abuse from truculent dog owners isn't part of their duties.).... Most of the dog park "Rules and Regulations" are actually ordinances, and you can be cited for breaking them. Public Safety doesn't have enough officers to station someone at the park, but the Parks staff will reach out to them to see about increased patrolling at busy dog park times (like late afternoon, or on really nice weather days). If you see a problem at the park, the non-emergency number is 717-238-9676..... The township is building a new website. They know that being able to submit a park registration form online is a feature most of us want.... If you don't have a printer and can't print the registration form, call Helen at 975-7575 and she'll be happy to mail you, complete with a return envelope. There will also be a "mailbox" set up at the park with registration forms inside. No excuses for not registering!.... The Parks Board really wants feedback from park users. Their regular meetings are at 7pm on the fourth Wednesday of each month, at Township Hall. Everyone is invited to attend. Public comments are heard early in the meetings, and then you can leave, so it really doesn't take much time..... The Board's June 28 meeting begins at Community Park at 7pm. If enough of us are interested, they are open to having a 6pm get-together specifically for dog park concerns. (None of the Board seem to follow social media. If all you want to do is complain on Facebook, you're really just shouting at the wind.)..... There's another Yappy Hour coming up soon. They're starting to send out invitations. If you know a dog-related local business that you think might attend, please give their details to Helen at [email protected].
