Step behind the scenes today at Meadow Vista Vet, where we will take you through start to finish on performing a COHAT for one of our patients today. When your pet comes into our clinic to assess their mouth, we take many steps to make sure your pet leaves with the best smile in town!
Our steps include:
An oral exam while your pet is awake so we can stage the periodontal disease and give you, the client, a general assessment of what to expect inside the mouth today: extractions, oral masses, broken or damaged teeth, cavities etc. The doctor will also perform a general exam to make sure your pet appears healthy on the outside to proceed forward.
An IV catheter and pre anesthetic bloodwork is done prior to any drugs being given so we can assess the health of the organs doing the work today in filtering out the anesthesia and drugs we give.
Once the inside of your petās health has been cleared, they get a premedication that consists of a narcotic, for pain control, and a drug to help prep the heart for anesthesia.
At induction, we give a medication that relaxes the skeletal muscular system so we can place an endotracheal tube down the airway. This tube allows the exchange of gas, 02 and carbon dioxide so your pet stays asleep while we perform the necessary procedures.
Immediately after induction, we hook your pet up to multiple monitors: EKG (heart beat), pulse ox (oxygen saturation in the blood), capnograph (measure the C02 at each breath out), temperature probe and blood pressure cuff. This extensive monitoring is carried out with the help of our own, eyes, ears and nose throughout the whole procedure.
Once your pet is under a good plane of anesthesia, we can proceed to obtaining whole mouth radiographs, probing all the tooth surfaces and doing a thorough oral exam looking for oral masses, lesions and damaged teeth.
After step 6, we create a treatment plan that entails extractions, ultrasonic scaling (removal of plaque, tartar and calculus from all tooth crown surfaces, polishing of the crowns (smooth the surface from micro groves caused by scaling), antibiotic gel applications, sealants and laser treatments.
Once we have executed the treatment plan, we can wake your pet up and allow them to recover in a nice and quiet space with plush towels and blankets and heated devices to keep their body temperature stable.
We keep your pet here for the remainder of the day to make sure their pain/discomfort is under control and they are waking up in a timely manner.
At the end of the day, I will sit down with you to go over the details of the treatments we did today, discuss aftercare and answer any questions you may have at this time.
If we did any extractions today in your petās mouth, I would like to see them back in two weeks to make sure the mouth is healing and create an oral care routine that you can execute at home based on your lifestyle and your petās temperament.
Oral care at home can include one or all of the following: brushing teeth (gold standard), dental diets, water additives, and oral daily chews.
We take great pride in providing the best care for your pet and their mouth and focus on building a team between the doctor, staff and you, so we can make sure your pet is receiving the best care possible and making sure their oral health is a top priority.
Give us a call today to schedule an oral exam (awake) so we can help make sure your pet has the best smile around!
