From not fasting before bloodwork to not testing during an acutely laminitic phase, there are many things owners can do to help ensure accurate diagnosis of PPID and/or EMS in their equines. This 12-minute film will guide you through the protocols for getting an accurate diagnosis: https://bit.ly/2AeLeim

Well that would be horrible. This is a great page to read and she has a patreon page that is well worth the money.

Under the stereo microscope.

This is a pearly like hard structure found in the hip joint of a 23 year old ex competition warmblood (WA9).

One thing I worry about when performing whole horse dissections is not to find an answer for the owner, for the horses pain or temperament. This one was easy. Thanks to Dr Ivana Ruddock-Lange for identifying this - synovial chondromatosis. A benign condition and quite rare. The joint can be filled with these pearly hard nodules, some clump together. In this case we found clumps measuring 3 cm across!

His owner knew something was wrong, despite the best of vets telling her he was fine.

The arrow shows where the nodule was attached to the soft tissue in the joint, by a thin chord like structure. There were 1000’s of nodules, and some had turned to bone.

In the same leg (his left hip), the stifle was bone on bone arthritis.

The one thing we can give our beloved horses is release. A day too long is too long. RIP sweet boy, your owner sacrificed herself to give you peace.

A huge find this weekend.

A navicular bone cyst and navicular bone changes AND adhesions between the navicular bone and the deep digital flexor tendon.

The photo below was taken using my macro lense on my camera and it just blew me away. Poor horse πŸ˜₯. It’s so clear, that the navicular bone and the tendon has tissue (adhesions) joining them. This is not normal.

Edited to add- this was a β€œdressage horse” 16:2, became lame, had remedial shoes, no improvement, was turned out barefoot for approx 1 year. Paddock sound during this time but no real improvement and could not return to the sport so was euthanased.

I will be posting my full video on this on Patreon if you would like more info:
