COLORADO DAYS 10 & 11:
*Apologies again for being late with this entry! Service continues to be an issue, but we've got no problem putting down the phone for a bit :)*
Day 10 was a hot one! We started the day by eating breakfast at a local food truck called Sunrise Burrito, then visited Orvis Hot Springs, originally a sacred place of healing for the Tabeguache Band of the Utes. It now consists of 7 different pools ranging from 65 to 112 degrees - one of which is a cold plunge - very invigorating! Afterwards, we took a ride towards Box Canyon Falls, a beautiful waterfall that funnels through a quartzite gorge - however, due to having Chewy with us and no dogs allowed, we had to change plans. We pivoted, and drove across town towards Cascade Falls, another beauty - Chewy got to enjoy the cool mist coming from this wonderful natural feature. After we were sufficiently cooled down, we made our way our of town and through Ouray, Ridgway, Montrose, Paonia, and through McClure Pass, 8,755 ft. up through the Elk Mountain Range, bringing us closer to Aspen, and eventually to Carbondale where we set up camp for the night.
We met up with some of Nate's family, who he hasn't seen in many, many years. They camped alongside us and we laughed, joked, cooked, and reminisced for hours before hitting the hay. It was great to catch up!
Day 11 was even hotter - a crisp 82 degrees with no clouds in the sky. Being up in elevation really makes you feel the sun more! We woke up after enjoying a little sleep-in, cooked breakfast, and caught up more with family. We broke off from them for the first half of the day in order to head towards Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park, where we rode the gondola up Iron Mountain to enter 2 separate cave tours. The caves themselves are actually one large system, connected with twisting routes that takes upwards of 3 hours to complete, so they sectioned it off into 2 separate tours for ease. It was amazing to see the natural formations created over eons, untouched by humans until it was discovered in the late 1800's.
After we finished with the cave tours, we headed back to camp to reconvene with the family, took a little downtime, then grabbed a great birthday dinner from Kedai Pho, a nice little Japanese restaurant in downtown Carbondale. The whole family enjoyed takeout while we ate underneath the sun, which was slowly becoming obscured by a light rain cloud.
We finished out the day with a walk into Carbondale with the family, s'mores by the fireplace, and we're about to hit the sack after another long but awesome day :)
