I’ve noticed a good many post looking for farriers. I’m not sure why. It’s not hard to keep a good farrier. If you’re constantly looking for a new farrier because the last guy won’t call you back it might not be the farriers. I’m sure price is the number on reason you have trouble. You pay peanuts you get the monkey shoeing your horses. After 5 years in this business here’s the reasons I fire clients.

-Do your horses stand? Contrary to popular believe it’s NOT our job to teach your horse to stand. If you have a horse that’s not trained, train it! Fluffy is not scared of men, quit making excuses for your ill mannered horses.

-Do you have your horses caught waiting on the farrier? This is one of the fastest ways for me to load up and leave. When your farrier arrives the horses should be caught and dry. Fly spray them if it’s the summer. I personally don’t mind working around blankets or fly sheets but be aware your farrier might.

-Do you keep your horses in a schedule? Most farriers do not sit around waiting for calls needing work, and if they do I’d be concerned using them. In my business it takes 2-3 weeks to work in new clients. And you’re probably going to have to haul to me.

-Do you have a safe work area? Flat ground, power for fans and tools.

-Do you pay as soon as the work is done?

If you answered no to any one question chances are you’re the problem not the farriers.

But in the flip side here’s what you should expect from your farrier:

-Do they continue their education? Clinics, certifications, contest, shop nights.

-Do they present themselves in a professional manner?

-Are they easy to communicate with?

-Do they book the next appointment before they leave?

And expect price increases. We are (well most of us) out here making a living.
