Yesterday, at our free monthly vaccine clinic in collaboration with the SCVMA volunteers, we provided veterinary services to 151 family pets. 21 cats and 130 dogs received vaccinations, microchips, flea and tick meds and deworming.
All of the 21 cats were already sterilized or were too small. Of the 130 dogs only 45 were not spayed or neutered and most of them were puppies.
Everyone leaves with information on how to access veterinary care including spay and neuter. Our next clinic is July 12th for South East And Central families with pets.

The 4th of July is one of the busiest times of year for animal shelters. Fireworks scare thousands of dogs every year, and even pets who have never run away before can panic and become lost.

Several years ago, Cookie was spayed and microchipped by Downtown Dog Rescue. When she became frightened by fireworks and ran away, she ended up safely at South LA Shelter. Because Cookie had a microchip, shelter staff were able to quickly identify her and contact her person. Instead of becoming another lost dog waiting for someone to claim her, Cookie was reunited with her family and back home where she belonged.

When she finally got home, Cookie slept soundly.

A microchip is a permanent form of identification that can make all the difference if your pet becomes lost. Animal hospitals typically charge $25–$75 for microchipping, but thanks to our partnership with volunteer veterinarians from the Southern California Veterinary Medical Association (SCVMA), we are offering FREE microchips for dogs living in South East and South Central Los Angeles.

DDR purchases the microchips directly from the supplier, and SCVMA volunteer veterinarians donate their time to help keep pets safe and connected to the people who love them.

Sixteen years ago, Tina was a six-month-old puppy at the center of an animal cruelty case. Downtown Dog Rescue helped build the case that led to her abuser's conviction.

When Tina first came to us, she was frightened and reactive. She had every reason not to trust people. There were moments when it seemed she wanted to bite anyone who came near her. She was considered a difficult dog to place. But we didn't give up on Tina. One of our board members saw past her fear and adopted her nearly 15 years ago.

A few weeks ago, now 16½ years old, Tina began showing symptoms that looked like a urinary tract infection. She returned to the DDR Clinic, where Dr. Rachel Hoffman examined her, ran bloodwork and a urinalysis, and developed a treatment plan. Today, Tina is doing so much better.

Looking at Tina now, it's hard to believe she is the same frightened puppy we met sixteen years ago.But that's what long-term commitment looks like. Tina found a family. And she never lost hers at DDR.

This is why access to veterinary care matters. For many families, the DDR Clinic is more than a spay and neuter clinic. It is their only opportunity to receive veterinary care for the pets they love. From puppies and kittens to senior pets like Tina, we provide exams, diagnostics, treatment, and ongoing care that helps pets stay healthy and stay home with the people who love them. For many in our community, our clinic is the only place they can turn when a pet becomes sick.

We were there when Tina's life began again. Because we don't give up on pets. We don't give up on families. Sixteen years later, Tina's story is still being written.

Our goal is to spay and neuter more than 100 cats in June.

If you live in South Los Angeles, Maywood, Huntington Park, Cudahy, Bell, Bell Gardens, Lynwood, South Gate, or Compton, you may qualify for this program.

This is a pay-what-you-can-afford clinic. No one will be turned away because they cannot afford to donate.

Each cat receives:
• Spay or neuter surgery
• Vaccines
• Microchip
• Deworming
• Flea treatment

Laila is our oldest dog in rescue at the age of 18 years old. We rescued Laila from South LA shelter way back in 2018 when she was only 10.

Rescue does not end when we take in a dog. That's just the beginning. Laila grew from a spirited zoomie running tail whipping diva who could go on hour long walks to a pampered queen who receives twice monthly acupuncture and cold laser therapy and has her own dedicated chauffeur who takes her on hour long joy rides because her joints aren't what they used to be.

While this isn't a conventional home or family, we are able to do this work and provide the animals in our care with enrichment and medical care to give them the best quality of life we can while they wait because of the support of our donors.
