Castaways is still looking for committed volunteers. We are uniquely located in Maysville which is adjacent to Jones County. A lot of people have PLENTY to say about the dog problem in this area. Castaways is trying to be part of the solution, but we cannot do it alone. We need help at the kennels: feeding, walking, and rotating dogs.

Be apart of the solution with us!

We are currently seeking committed volunteers to help with our kennels, fundraisers, and more.

We are also opening up board member positions which will be available in the spring!! Specifically the Secretary position and the Treasurer.

Please identify your skill sets in the volunteer application.

It was always about the dogs. This whole organization. Attempting to unite broken dogs with imperfect people and forming a bond that would transcend years of human frustrations.

They are truly some of creation’s best. God knocked it out of the park.

⭐️ UPDATE: HOME FOUND!

Rusty has waited his whole life for a Hapoy Valentines Day- give this Senior a loving home for the rest of his days!

Senior - Large - Male - Hound Mix

ABOUT:
HOUSE-TRAINED - Trained
HEALTH - Vaccinations up to date, undergoing heartworm treatment

Meet Rusty, a newly retired hunting dog. Living in a kennel amongst other dogs, or possibly by himself, for the majority of his life, assumedly, and being starved of food and human affection, was all this sweet boy had ever known. He came to Castaways emaciated, timid, and riddled with worms. This sweet boy had never been on a leash and obviously wasn’t let out of his former kennel much. Rusty is learning to trust his caregivers at the shelter, and is gladly accepting the love, food, and safety being offered to him. Once a sad, defeated dog, Rusty now has a sparkle in his eye, a smile in his soul, and some wags in his tail. He deserves to be shown love and kindness for the rest of his life.

Sweet Finn has been waiting for his special someone for over 8 months!

ABOUT:
HOUSE-TRAINED - Yes
HEALTH - Vaccinations up to date & Neutered
GOOD IN A HOME WITH - Dog Selective

He is a sweet, rambunctious, handsome boy, who will do anything for a treat! He is leash and house trained and will follow a few simple commands too! Finn is dog- selective and does not do well with small animals. He would probably do best in a household without kids. Finn is very excited to find his perfect fit of a forever home and loving caregiver.

Aubrey is still waiting for her Valentine!

Young - Female - Medium - Pit Bull Terrier Mix

ABOUT:
HOUSE-TRAINED - Yes
HEALTH - Vaccinations up to date & Spayed

She was found wandering around Lowe’s Food by a good Samaritan who had her scanned for a microchip, which she did not have. She was adopted from the shelter, and was returned within a month, with a broken leg! Aubrey has since had the corrective surgery and has made a complete recovery from her injury. Nothing can stop this girl! She has an immense amount of energy and love to let out. Aubrey plays well with other dogs (and humans!). Fetch and tug-of-war are her favorite games to play. She does know a few simple commands, and requires a constant supply of durable balls and chew toys. Aubrey would do well with a playful caregiver who has the time for cuddles!

Our Story

The founder of Castaways Rescue is an active duty veteran who began fostering dogs with her husband (co-founder) while stationed overseas in Okinawa, Japan circa 2014. It was there that the founders were inspired by the relentless efforts of rescue workers who sought to save as many dogs from euthanasia as possible. We are proud to say that we have maintained a relationship with one such worker, and she currently serves as a board member.

In 2017, the desire to form our own rescue struck us deeply, as we returned from overseas, and continued to see the horrific euthanasia rates not only in Onslow County, where the rescue was founded, but in North Carolina as a whole. Furthermore, we observed that most local area rescues and shelters were at capacity and having to turn dogs away or resort to euthanasia. It was evident that more rescues were needed. In 2019, the founders decided there would never be a ‘perfect time’ to embark upon the journey of creating a non-profit dog rescue and filed their Articles of Incorporation with the state of North Carolina. In June 2020, Castaways Rescue, Inc became an official 501c3.

The name Castaways was selected because we believe every being has inherent value and worth, and therefore, should not simply be “casted” aside. In a world rife with the mentality that failure constitutes defeat, we see failure as an opportunity for growth and second chances.
