๐Ÿšจ Intestinal Blockages in Pets: More Common Than You Think ๐Ÿšจ

Our pets are naturally curious, and sometimes that curiosity can get them into trouble. Dogs and cats often explore the world with their mouths, which means they may swallow things they shouldnโ€™tโ€”including toys, socks, rocks, hair ties, corn cobs, bones, string, clothing, and even large amounts of hair from grooming.

With BBQ season here, itโ€™s especially important to be cautious. Corn cobs and cooked bones are among the most common causes of intestinal blockages in pets. While they may seem harmless, these items can become lodged in the stomach or intestines and prevent food and water from passing normally.

โš ๏ธ Signs of an Intestinal Blockage May Include:
โ€ข Vomiting or repeated attempts to vomit
โ€ข Loss of appetite
โ€ข Lethargy or weakness
โ€ข Abdominal pain or bloating
โ€ข Straining to defecate or inability to pass stool
โ€ข Diarrhea
โ€ข Excessive drooling
โ€ข Restlessness or signs of discomfort
โ€ข Dehydration

An intestinal blockage is a medical emergency and can become life-threatening if left untreated. In many cases, surgery is required to remove the obstruction and prevent serious complications such as intestinal damage, infection, or rupture.

If you suspect your pet may have swallowed something they shouldnโ€™t haveโ€ฆ even if they seem normal at firstโ€ฆ please contact your veterinarian immediately. Early diagnosis and treatment can make all the difference.

๐Ÿพ When in doubt, itโ€™s always better to have your pet checked. A quick visit could save their life.
