Attention all potential fawn-nappers! Just because you see a baby deer alone doesn’t mean it’s lost—this isn’t a Disney movie.
Fawns are often left alone for hours while mom hides nearby to keep predators away. It’s not neglect—it’s nature’s plan.
Found one? Don’t panic. Give it at least 24 hours before assuming it's orphaned.
If the fawn is crying nonstop, looks injured or is covered in flies, call the N.C. Wildlife Helpline at 866-318-2401.

The Mayodan Police Department receives hundreds of animal related calls each year. The primary responsibilities of the Department’s Animal Control Officer is public safety, animal protection, and animal complaint resolution. These goals are accomplished through a combination of education and the enforcement of municipal and state laws pertaining to animals. The Animal Control Officer performs a variety of field services, which include:
Patrol city streets and parks to ensure compliance with animal laws.
Impound stray, sick, or injured domestic animals. Work to educate
The public to animal and human safety Enforce Mayodan Municipal Code (i.e. rabies tag up to date, leash law, sanitation, etc.).
Locate lost and reunite animals with their families
Work with local vet to complete animal bite reports and quarantine biting animals.
Make every attempt to reunite found animals with their owners.
Respond to animal complaints (i.e. barking dogs, stray animals, etc.).
Investigate reports of aggressive animals
Investigate reports of animal neglect or abuse.
The Animal Control Officer is charged with impounding stray, abandoned, abused, dangerous, or injured animals, as well as, any animal found in violation of City Codes. All uninjured dogs and cats taken into custody by the Animal Control Officer will be delivered to the Rockingham County Animal Shelter located at 250 Cherokee Camp Rd Reidsville NC. Fees for redemption of animals will be paid at the Mayodan Police Department located at 101 N . 3rd Avenue. Owners must present a fee receipt to recover impounded animals. Shelter hours are Monday through Friday 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm
