Sometimes the best care is simply meeting pets where they feel most comfortable. Not every pup is the “oh my gosh, here’s my best friend” type, and that’s perfectly okay. Some of my sweet clients come from shelters or rescues, and others are pandemic pups who had limited socialization early on. However their story began, I completely understand that they need patience, gentleness, and a soft approach.
At Happy Paws, I have a soft spot for shy dogs. I’m comfortable with slow introductions, calm energy, and simply giving them space until they’re ready. Because here’s the magic—with patience, love, and yes, maybe a few tasty treats, the most beautiful bonds begin to bloom.
Meet Honey. Honey had a very hard start to life, spending her early years in poor conditions and experiencing mistreatment before being rescued from a hoarding situation by authorities. At our meet-and-greet, Honey’s mom shared that she still shows signs of PTSD from her past and can be fearful and slow to trust new people. When we went outside during the meet-and-greet, she was so cautious around me that she wouldn’t come back inside while I was there.
At my drop-ins, I quickly realized her pen is her safe place and where she feels most comfortable. So after her potty breaks and leash walks outside, I decided we would spend our time together in her pen where she felt safe. I sat with her, talked to her, offered her treats, and simply spent time hanging out.
At the end of my booking, I’m happy to say I earned her trust. She was coming in and out of the house while still leashed, as I’m not sure she would come in on her own yet, but she was doing so confidently and taking treats from my hand. We still have work to do, but we have come along way. Our friendship didn’t happen overnight, but every ounce of that earned trust was worth it. Sometimes the best relationships take a little extra time, and I’m happy to give it.
My new beautiful friend, Honey❤️
