GOOD JOB GUMMY (a.k.a. Gunther) ❤ A few months ago an individual reached out to us to see if we had a horse who would make a good companion for a 38 year old gelding (Sunny) who was about to lose his long time friend. We were originally going to send Chevy but things worked out that Gummy got the assignment.

Gummy is a nervous fella and so there was an adjustment period. But his fosters stuck it out with him because he was doing a good job at comforting Sunny.

Unfortunately Sunny's people did not have as much time left with him as they'd hoped. When they saw he wasn't thriving they made the difficult decision to say a peaceful goodbye. They let us know that Gummy's service was about to be done.

The day came this week and our sweet Gummy continued his service in the most loving of ways. We received this message from his foster:

"Gummy was a beautiful soul today. He stood with us and grieved his friend for over an hour. When we moved him to bury he smelled where Sunny last lay and that was it. He loaded up like a champion and is headed to your barn. They should be there in 30 minutes. I sent his feed bag with dinner and an unopened bag of Purina Senior. Thank you for trusting us with him for the short few months he was here."

So often people huff and scoff at the idea of "companion/non-riding" horses. Gummy has a previous injury that makes him unrideable. But his life still has value. He still has something amazing to bring to the table....a loving, compassionate and gentle heart. Friendship. Comfort.

Gummy is urgently seeking a new assignment as a companion. He is not happy at the rescue barn. He does much better in a less hectic setting with open fields and a small friend group. If you have some horse experience to help Gummy through his initial nerves and need a horse to be a companion for one of your horses....please reach out.

Horses don't have to be rideable to have value. Gummy (a.k.a. Gunther) is clear proof.

Please keep Gummy and those who loved his pal Sunny in your thoughts.

Every little bit helps.

WE CAN ONLY SAY "YES" IF YOU DO....The story about the senior gelding who we had to euthanize this week has touched so many people. I am grateful that his story is making a difference and helping to raise awareness about the importance of seeing things through for your horses when the time comes, instead of trying to sell them and make a buck, while they suffer as a result.

But I feel it is important to also point out the current reality for our rescue and many more. Donations are at an all time low. We have already drastically scaled back the number of horses that we consider "capacity" at any given time.

It used to be we could confidently care for about 21 horses at a time.

This year, we've had to scale that back to 11.

"Capacity" for us is not measured in physical space, but in the donor support available to provide quality nourishment, vet care and farrier care to horses while they await adoption.

The cost of all aspects of horse care is drastically up. Donations are drastically down.

If nothing changes, we'll have to cut our "capacity" even more.

Even bringing a horse into the rescue, just to offer them a peaceful end costs several hundred dollars.

We have cut the corners where we can. But we will never cut corners on quality feed, quality vet care/farrier care and other accommodations that give every horse the best chance possible at a positive healthy life with an adopter. So the only thing we can do, is hold fewer horses.

Our target group of horses are companion (non-riding) horses and senior horses. While we sometimes have riding horses, companions and seniors are the ones that we consider most vulnerable and so we always try to say "yes". This particular sub-group of horses often don't yield large adoption fees to help replenish the cost of caring for them. We know that so many of our supporters want the best for these at-risk horses and therefore want our rescue to be able to help.

Right now, we, like many equine organizations and even non-profits that serve humans, are at a crossroads. Donations have to come swiftly in order for our work to continue. Period.

There is a clear need for WV Horse Network in our community. Horses, especially senior/companion horses, NEED us to be able to say "yes" when the call comes. We approach these cases with an open mind, consult with our veterinarian and take reasonable steps to help horses find a new, safe home, even if they cannot be ridden.

The individual who helped get this gelding to us said when she became of aware of his situation she didn't know what to do, but she knew in her heart she had to do something. She asked a trusted friend of hers what she should do and her friend said "call WV Horse Network". Thank goodness when she did, we were here and were able to make a spot very quickly.

Our rescue is embarking on our 12th year of helping horses.

We need your support in a very big way, right now if you'd like us to continue to serve horses who may otherwise fall through the cracks. We need your support so that horses have a place to come "home" to when their adopter's circumstances change (because as times get tougher for people, that will continue to be an need). We need your support so that our rehabbed horses have a place to wait for an adopter to come along.

JELLY is such an absolute delight to be around and handle. She will make the very best partner for someone soon. She was a rockstar at our Fun Show last weekend.

Her volunteer handler Jeannie had this to say after the show Saturday:

"This gorgeous 22 year old saddle horse is available for adoption through West Virginia Horse Network. I have had a blast showcasing her. She is enjoying her time at the show this weekend.

Her class placings:
1st place senior horse in hand trail
3rd place adult in hand obstacles
4th place rescue horse in hand trail
3rd senior halter
6th costume

I am so insanely proud of her. She is the perfect size small horse for the family."

Jelly was reportedly broke to ride according to her previous owner, although it had been several years. A volunteer had a short test ride at the show and that went well. We have another volunteer who is planning to do a second test ride in a different environment next weekend. We'll let you know.

Jelly is an absolute angel for our vet and our farrier. She is so good that she'd probably stand there quietly even if there wasn't a handler holding her.

We honestly cannot say enough about this treasure of a mare.

We'll get her listing up soon and begin accepting adoption applications for her after a few more rides.

Besides an occasional flare up of a fly allergy she is in stellar health and not on any maintenance medications.

She will need a petite rider as she has a smaller frame.

Jelly got front shoes put on today. If you'd like to sponsor her farrier visit ($100) we'd greatly appreciate it.

West Virginia Horse Network has agreed to accept this older mare in need of our help.

She has vision impairment and is clearly underweight.

When she arrives she will need to be seen by our veterinarian.

We need your help raising funds to help with her intake costs if you are able.

Our goal is to raise $500.

FearNot Stables

FearNot Stables is a haven for fearful riders. I have been a fearful rider since my riding accident in 2011. It has been a long ride back to feeling comfortable in the saddle. I have learned conquering fear takes the support of family, friends, and horse professionals. FearNot Stables is just one support tool of your journey.

This facility provides a safe and supportive environment for all riders. We are not a fancy place but promote the best care to meet each horse’s and individual’s needs.

I look forward to working with you on your journey back to enjoying the presence of a horse in your life.
