📣 ANNOUNCEMENT: SMACF Becomes “Friends of the Blount County Animal Center” 📣

The Smoky Mountain Animal Care Foundation is going to call itself by a new and more fitting name: we are now the Friends of the Blount County Animal Center.

The name is being changed to make the nonprofit organization’s partnership with Blount County Animal Center more obvious to the public.

“We believe this name will better align with our mission, which is to provide funding to BCAC for exceptional medical care and to maximize adoptions,” said Diane Martin, president of Friends of the BCAC.

Our new email address is [email protected]

SMACF was established in 2007 as a nonprofit organization to partner with Blount County government to create a $1.6 million state-of-the-art animal care facility. BCAC is the only open-access municipal shelter in the county.

Once the shelter was built and operating, SMACF focused its efforts on raising money to ensure exceptional medical care and positive adoption outcomes. Thanks to the support of the nonprofit, BCAC has a full-time veterinarian, as well as support staff and facilities for surgery and high-quality medical care.

Last year, funding provided by the nonprofit coupled with a dedicated staff and 250 active volunteers, helped BCAC boasted a 91% placement rate for dogs and a 93% placement rates for cats through adoption, rescue, and transport.

Despite the name change, Smoky Mountain Animal Care Foundation will be retained as a legal name of the organization. Donations can be made to either Smoky Mountain Animal Care Foundation (SMACF) or (dba) Friends of the Blount County Animal Center.

A phone call can change the lives for dogs in our state!

⚠️TENNESSEE DOGS NEED US TO MAKE SOME PHONE CALLS!⚠️

An important bill will be heard before our state legislators in the Criminal Justice Subcommittee on Wednesday, 3/23.

BILL HB2034: This bill is very similar to the one that recently passed in Texas in 2021, allowing for tethering of animals but requiring humane standards, such as properly fitting collars, the banning of chains, and a minimum of 10 feet length for a tether (or 5x's the dog's body length).

HB2034 Details: https://wapp.capitol.tn.gov/apps/BillInfo/default.aspx?BillNumber=HB2034&GA=112

🐶 This will empower Animal Control and groups like BCAWS to do more for the dogs in Blount County! This will improve their lives, and the lives of dogs all over Tennessee!
