This is incredible! I really hope it gains traction in other areas, it would be fantastic to see it become a widely available resource for everyone.

West Richland Police Department
INTRODUCING A WEST RICHLAND PUBLIC MICRO-CHIP SCANNING STATION: Free scanner available 24/7 for your use to reunite a lost dog with its owner and keep it out of the highly overcrowded shelter system

First of all, several thank you’s are in order. (1) Thank you to the West Richland Police and Community Care Foundation for supporting this for our city. (2) Thank you to the anonymous donor that donated our sign. (3) Let’s thank Moe from the city maintenance division for piecing together this project and getting her in the ground.

So, what is a “Micro-chip Scanning Station?” This station is located at the east end of the West Richland Police Department parking lot, under multiple surveillance cameras and a manned building. If you find a lost dog, you can take it to this station and scan it for a microchip (same as you would by taking it to a vet clinic or animal shelter to be scanned). If a chip is located, there are instructions provided at the station for reunification. If a chip or owner is NOT located, you must take the dog back with you temporarily until another safe disposition can be found. The sign will be considered a warning: Leaving a dog behind at this scanning station is considered abandonment and violation of the WRMC 6.20.020 Abandonment prohibited. There is ZERO tolerance for animal abandonment within our city limits. Every person convicted of a violation of this shall be punished by a fine of not more than $5,000 or by imprisonment for not more than 365 days, or by both such fine and imprisonment.

The goal of this station is to lower the number of shelter intakes and reunite the dog with its owner out in the field. This station also provides means to help our community and lost dogs outside of business hours, on holidays, weekends, and at a safe location. I am truly excited for this station to help dogs get back home fast. Please micro-chip your pets and let the scanning commence!

🐕🐕‍🦺 Dog Park Safety Tips 🐩🦮

Source: VCA Animal Hospitals

Playing with friends, exploring new sights and sounds, and running to their hearts content—it’s no wonder our dogs love the dog park! Dogs crave the social interaction, mental stimulation and physical exertion the dog park has to offer.

However, when so much exuberant canine chaos is corralled into a limited space, some problems may end up infringing on the fun. Here’s what you can do to keep your pup’s visits to the dog park healthy and safe.

• Check in with your veterinarian. Make sure your dog can handle the rollicking fun. For example, puppies are not only at risk for infection, they may also find this form of socialization overwhelming. Meanwhile, elderly, arthritic dogs may not appreciate being barreled into by their younger, rowdier counterparts.

• Keep vaccines up-to-date. Protect against common diseases like distemper and Bordetella (kennel cough), which spread easily from dog to dog, and leptospirosis, which may be found in the park’s water features like ponds or creeks.

• Use routine parasite preventives. Stop fleas, ticks and intestinal worms from following your dog home from the park.

• Avoid rush hour. Your dog only needs a handful of friends to have fun. A crowded park is more likely to lead to injury.

• Limit treats and toys. This can avoid conflict with the other park patrons who may love to sn**ch these from your dog.

• Bring plenty of water. A bottle and a collapsible water bowl can keep your dog hydrated through their playful exertions.

• Mind your dog’s manners. In all the excitement, your dog may forget themselves and become a nuisance to their friends with pushy play or undesirable behaviors. Be prepared to leash your dog and redirect their attention to a new activity.

• Always supervise. Catch a problematic situation before it escalates.

Prepare for your dog park outing by purchasing parasite preventives.

While we adore kids, we wholeheartedly agree with this perspective. Ultimately, it comes down to safety. Unfortunately, allowing little ones to walk your furry friends can expose them to various potential risks.

This post was originally intended to promote water safety for people, but Big Hearts Little Paws sees its value extending beyond that. It's just as important for our furry friends! Dogs can easily be swept away by strong currents or face unpredictable accidents near water. Please consider choosing a brightly colored life jacket for your pets; it could save their lives too.
