Good morning from the farm.
Osiris, our little hatchling who had a bit of trouble getting out of his shell after Mrs. E had hatched 9 others and left the nest, is doing very well indeed.
Osiris is a fighter, and we were unsure the first few days if they were going to make it. All they would do is pretty much sleep.
However, Osiris is eating and drinking, is now up and getting use to their multi-toe feet, and the ant bites are healing up.
We are trying out a wooden “incubator / brooder” that was sent to us to review, and so far it seems to be perfect as a Hospital Coop for Osiris, and the special halogen bulb provides more than enough heat and spectrum lighting for Osiris.
Mrs.E was up at 6:30, leaving her night time nest in the Hay Barn, and bringing her 9 chicks out to forage.
We have a low waterer for the chicks to reach and also have an area set up for them to get a bit of pellet and crumble.
The Muscovy girls are co-parenting their 3 little ducklings and they are doing great as well.
One of their ducklings, the light brownish one, seems not to pay much attention and wanders off, following other Muscovy’s.
Yesterday, they followed one of our large males all the way down to the back fence area before realizing that he was not his mama’s, and started crying.
The black & white mama ( she is also the larger of the two), had to go get them.
Yesterday we worked a bit more on the new Bantam Coop, getting the wall together and re-installing the new automatic coop door.
We got the roof trusses up, and now I just have to line it with our empty grain bags for waterproofing, and we will use pallet slats to create the roof cover.
Once that’s done, we will tie everything together, endure the welded wire and top cover is secure, and make a lock for the coop main door.
Hopefully, we will have the Bantams in there by Friday.
