Today is National Dog Day 🐾—a day to celebrate the joy and love dogs bring to our lives. But for rescues, it’s also a reminder of one of our greatest challenges: we cannot save dogs without foster homes. Foster families are the backbone of rescue. Without them, there’s simply no place for dogs in need to go.

Mid-Atlantic Great Dane Rescue League (MAGDRL) is at an all-time low for foster families. We know fostering can feel overwhelming, so here’s what we want you to know:
🏠 We never “dumps” a dog on a foster. Every Dane is carefully evaluated, and we only place them in homes that are a good fit.
💜 We cover many fostering expenses—especially medical—so you can focus on giving love and stability.
🔍 Transparency is our standard. The worst outcome for everyone is a failed placement, which is why we work closely with fosters to ensure the match is right.

Sometimes, all a Dane needs is the chance to heal in a home. Take Jax, for example. He was found as a stray on "Hump Mountain" in WV—emaciated, shy, and sick. After care and love from a foster family, he blossomed into a confident, affectionate companion and was quickly adopted. Today, Jax is thriving with his forever family.

Not every Dane’s story is the same—some come from loving homes that can no longer care for them, others from harder pasts. But in every case, fosters are what make their second chance possible.

We are trying to help find a home for Capt. Jack. His owner is experiencing some life changing events and can no longer care for him and he needs a new home within the next two weeks. Captain Jack is a 3-year-old Great Dane. He is sweet and loves cuddling, extremely submissive to people and children, but he has a jealous heart and is dominant toward other dogs. We think he would do best in a single dog home. However, he has done well with some other dogs, so if you are an experienced dog owner and have other dogs, we would like to do a meet and greet to make sure they are compatible. Capt. Jack is extremely laid back and submissive to people, house-broken, crate trained and responds to core commands. Capt. Jack is not part of MAGDRL, he is available by his owner and is free to a good home. Fenris is a friendly, easygoing, and well-mannered boy who gets along with everyone—dogs, cats, chickens, and kids of all ages! He has lived in both apartments and houses, is crate trained, and walks nicely on a leash. Fenris avoids conflict and is truly a sweetheart.

Fenris and his brother Thor belonged to someone who was diagnosed with Muscular Dystrophy and had to move into special housing that does not allow big dogs. While Fenris has been loved and cared for, he and his brother have been living outside due to space limitations. Meet Murphy Scott & Rex Riley, two 9-month-old Great Dane (possibly mix) brothers who have had a heartbreaking start. Their owner abandoned them in a freezing garage when she left the state, leaving them to fend for themselves in 20-degree weather. Thankfully, a kind person stepped in to save them, but they can’t stay where they are much longer and desperately need homes—together or separately.
🐾 Why They’re Amazing:
✔ Lovable & Snuggly – These boys crave affection and will melt into your arms.
✔ Great with Kids & Dogs – Gentle, friendly, and well-socialized.
✔ Crate & House Trained – They’ve only ever been indoor dogs.

I was unjustly put on the naughty list. I was in a deep sleep and when I woke up, you were gone. I knew someone had taken you and that you were never coming back! I checked every room, leaving no blanket unturned. I thought I caught a break in the kitchen, when I spotted the plates in the sink. but I made sure they were clean, they didn't know anything. That's when I noticed the trashcan smelled a little off, I tried to pry out his secrets, we wrestled, but he was holding out on me. That's when I found it... thinking it was soooo clever, crouching down, all sneaky-like, behind that large box on the dark side of the counter. But I recognized it, that big softy! I knew if I tore into it a few times, it would spill its guts. I was a couple of shakes short of it revealing your whereabouts when you mysteriously returned from the void... and that's why I was interrogating your sweater; it had to be done; it was the only way to save you.
