3 Basic Truths to be a Successful Dog Breeder:

1.) Avoid the vortex of the drama dealers, while it can be entertaining (until they set their sights on you) it’s totally non-productive.

Usually it’s promoted as “caring deeply” and “educational” but it’s always targeted at people who are in the way of an agenda. Gossip is not educational and only hurts in the long run. That ‘bad breeder’ you are being warned away from may be the very one you need to get on the right path.

Can’t think of anyone who got ahead joining in a cult, the time is better spent working with your dogs.

2.) If a dog comes available that would move your program ahead, pull on your shoes and get it ASAP.

Do not at any time listen to ‘peers’ that advise you that some very minor cosmetic fault is a deal killer. They aren’t mentoring you; they are knee-capping you to advance their program.

Just saw a post recently from a newer breeder that turned down their ‘dream dog’ because it had a curled tail and shortly afterwards their foundation girl bloated. Now tell me, which is more important? Founding your lines off a bloat dog? Or a minor fault like a curled tail?

3.) Peer pressure and advice from competitors along with rules from others who don’t pay the bills; “I don’t care” is a complete statement.

You know what is best for your situation, have the confidence to do it.

Focusing on the interest and passion that got you started will always produce the best results.

When the white Standard Poodle Ch. Puttencove Promise claimed Best in Show at Westminster in 1958, he was already a well-established star. Born on January 20, 1955, Promise began making waves early—earning his first two BIS wins in 1956 as a yearling. The following year, he added nine more BIS titles to his name, ranking him among the Top Ten all-breed winners of 1957.

By December 1957, Promise had been shown 38 times, securing Best of Variety in 37 of those appearances and 11 all-breed Best in Show wins. He continued his winning streak into 1958, with two more BIS titles—one of them being the prestigious Westminster victory that cemented his place in dog show history.🐾

Although one of the genes for DM has been found in poodles, it is still a very rare disease. Newer breeders who lack experience are putting too much stock in their DM results, let alone testing every single generation of their lines for DM. It's overkill. I only test for DM when I bring an new outside line in. Anything more than that is a waste of my time and money and giving a false positive light to the public by making them think DM in poodles is actually an issue.
