Today, we honor the memories of those who have passed and acknowledge their sacrifices. As we enter the summer season, the team at BCES will be taking a well-deserved day off to prepare for the upcoming season, relax, and perform necessary maintenance.

If you have an existing appointment it is still being honored. Otherwise, please reach out to schedule a visit later this week.

A gentle reminder as the weather shapes up that we function by appointment only. As tempting as it is to just pop in, we are a busy place. Our training services require focus, those taking lessons expect to not be interrupted and this is also someone’s home. Please reach out to make an appointment and don’t just stop in. We really appreciate it!

What to Expect When You Send Your Horse to Training🐴

When a horse comes to us for training, our goal is to build a solid, well-rounded foundation that sets them up for long-term success.

Here’s what that looks like:

🧱 Foundation First
We start with the basics. Ground manners, respect, softness, and understanding pressure before moving into more advanced work. A strong foundation creates a confident, willing horse.

🔁 Consistent, Thoughtful Sessions
Training is approached in a progressive, step-by-step way. We focus on clear communication, repetition, and rewarding the try so horses can learn without being rushed.

🧠 Mental & Physical Development
It’s not just about what a horse can do, it’s about how they feel doing it. We prioritize relaxation, confidence, and correct movement so horses stay willing and comfortable in their work.

🌲 Exposure & Real-World Experience
When appropriate, horses are introduced to different environments, obstacles, and situations to help create a more versatile, dependable partner.

🤝 Owner Involvement Is Encouraged
We welcome owners to come watch sessions, ask questions, and learn alongside their horse. Our goal is for you to understand what your horse knows and how to continue building on it at home.

📋 A Plan for Going Home
Before your horse leaves, we go over what they’ve learned and how to maintain and progress their training moving forward.

We’re not about shortcuts. We’re about building horses that are confident, soft, and prepared for whatever job lies ahead.

If you’re considering sending a horse in for training and want to learn more, feel free to reach out.

❄️ Extreme Cold Barn Check-In ❄️

With the arctic temperatures settling in, we’ve shifted fully into cold-weather management mode here at the barn.

All 32 horses are inside tonight and tomorrow, out of the wind and weather. Everyone has plenty of hay, fresh water, and the ability to move, stretch, and stay comfortable as temperatures drop well below zero.

A few things we’re prioritizing during this cold snap:

🌾 Forage, forage, forage
Hay is the furnace. Keeping constant forage in front of them helps maintain body heat and supports gut health in extreme cold.

💦 Hydration checks
Cold weather can decrease water intake, so we’re monitoring buckets closely and making sure everyone has access to unfrozen, clean water. Snow and ice aren’t substitutes for drinking.

🏡 Shelter and space
Bringing everyone inside allows protection from wind chill and gives horses the space they need while still considering herd dynamics.

🐎 Movement matters
Even on brutally cold days, horses benefit from the ability to walk, shift, and stretch. Movement helps circulation, digestion, and overall comfort.

🐴 Individual needs first
Blankets are used thoughtfully, based on each horse’s condition, coat, age, and acclimation. There’s no one-size-fits-all answer in weather like this.

Cold like this is tough, but good management makes all the difference. We’ll continue to monitor closely and adjust as needed until this stretch passes.

Stay warm out there, and give your horses an extra check-in tonight 💙🐴
