Fireworks can be very stressful for your dog. Here are some suggestions to make your dog more comfortable during fireworks.
Make Sure Your Pet Has Proper ID. Ensure that the information on your pet’s collar is current and make sure your dog is microchipped and has a GPS device. Many dogs try to escape the noise and smells from fireworks and can escape the property. Terrified dogs will go through screen doors or push through open doors. Do not tether your dog outside or leave in fenced yard, this is cruel and can result in an injured or lost dog.
Create a Safe Haven for Your Dog. Try setting up an area in a quiet space away from windows, such as a basement or a larger closet. so that they can’t hear or see fireworks. Use a crate if that’s where your dog feels safe, and make sure to provide them with familiar toys and treats.
Play White Noise. You can try leaving a fan, TV, or sound machine on to help mask the sounds of the fireworks.
Comfort An Anxious Dog. Comfort your dog if he’s afraid. The key here is in how you do so. It’s important to remain calm and use a soothing, even tone. Petting them can be comforting. Do not get mad if they become frantic or even mess in the house.
Walks and outside activities before fireworks start.
Try a pressure vest. Pressure vests are also called anxiety wraps, thundershirts, and anxiety jackets or vests. They apply gentle pressure to your dog’s torso. Studies have found that pressure vests may ease stress in dogs if they are used often and comfortably.
Talk to Your Vet. If your pet’s anxiety is severe, consider booking an appointment with your vet well in advance of the holiday so you can discuss a medication that could help soothe your dog’s anxiety.
