Life will find ways to knock you down and it will succeed. Be the kind of person that stands back up again anyway despite the adversity.

Sometime between 2:30p and 5:15p today someone damaged the Paws and Play mailbox.

Based on where it landed, it doesn’t look like a simple sideswipe. It’s lying opposite the direction of traffic, which is odd.

We get that accidents happen, but leaving without saying anything isn’t okay, especially when it’s easy enough to just let us know.

If you happened to see something during that time, have cameras facing that way, etc., we’d appreciate any information.

Thank you to anyone and everyone that may be able to help with that matter.

I’m still amazed sometimes that this was all just a dream I had 20 years ago, back when I was working as a veterinary technician. I was just an 18 year old girl who wanted to open her own boarding facility. A place where dogs could be dogs - run, play, be happy.

It was exactly 3 years ago today that we signed our lease for the building. Just shy of 3 months later we opened the doors on November 1st, 2023.

Now 3 years later we have been privileged to love on over 1,000 pets, processed over 50,000 bookings, and been shown more appreciation than can be quantified. 🩵

We are so grateful for the support of our Paws & Play Pack. Thank you to our community for trusting us with your furry family members and helping us build something we are so proud of. 🐾🫶

We’ve had a few inquiries lately about our facility, policies, and more so we wanted to share a bit of that information with our wider audience.

🐕‍🦺 Collars: We keep our facility and yard collar free. Collars can help with ID, but they also pose a safety risk during play. Instead, we rely on secure fencing and close supervision to keep everyone safe.

🥏 Exercise Yards: Fully fenced with 6 to 8 foot fencing, staked at the base and checked regularly.

🚨 Emergencies: We have an established emergency action plan. We are trained to recognize signs of distress and respond quickly if needed. In the rare event of an emergency, you’ll be contacted right away using the information provided at registration.

Of course, prevention is always our first priority and that’s where you come in too! Here are a few things you can do to help keep your pet and others safe while in our care -

📋 Pet Q&A: When you register, we ask detailed questions about your dog’s history and behavior. This could include anything from dog reactivity, scared of storms/loud noises, Houdini Skills, and more. Having this history helps us plan for individual needs and keep every pet safe.

🆘 Emergency Contacts: Please make sure you have a current emergency contact on file. This should be someone local, not traveling with you, who can pick up your pet or advise on your behalf if we can’t reach you.

🚪Entering/Exiting Facility: When entering or exiting the building, please make sure the door closes fully (latches) behind you. It helps keep your pet, and every pet in our care, safe and secure.

Your pet’s safety is always our top priority, and we’re happy to answer any questions about the facility, care practices, and more. Don’t hesitate to reach out! 🩵

✅ Current vaccine records on file in advance (one less stressor at drop-off)
✅ Pet Q&A completed so we understand your pet’s unique needs, triggers, and preferences
✅ Enough of your pet’s normal food, since diet changes can add unnecessary stress on top of a new environment
✅ Any medications, clearly labeled with dosage and pet’s name
✅ A favorite blanket or comfort item - familiar smells help create positive associations with their stay
✅ Leash & collar or harness for safe check-in and check-out

📋 For detailed feeding or medication instructions, log them into Kennelbooker in advance or bring them written out. Clear instructions help us maintain consistency.

🚪 A little patience at drop-off goes a long way. If another pup is in the lobby, please give them space by waiting until they’ve checked in or out. Lobbies can be a lot for pets already navigating fear, anxiety, and stress (FAS).

Your patience helps us keep the environment calm and lets every pet, social or not, transition at their own pace. 🫶

We placed 🥉 in the TR’s Best of the Best for Animal Boarding & Daycare!

While we’re proud to have placed third, we know we just haven’t shown enough people the quality of care we offer. 💪🏼

For us, the measure of what makes us the best lives in the details, the little nuances in the care we provide. The kind that recently earned us a new nickname: “the country club of dog boarding.” We took that as inspiration and started brainstorming. 🤔

The first upgrade: a beverage fridge, stocked and ready, so you can grab a complimentary drink before you hit the road. Many of our clients drive 30+ minutes to see us, and this is one small way we can say thanks for supporting us.

Next: a dog scale rated to 600 lbs, so we can track weights when needed and make sure bath pricing is accurate and fairly charged.

It’s details like these that help elevate the level of care we provide here at Paws & Play, and help us live up to that “country club” nickname. ✨

It’s been a minute since we’ve posted some photos. This has genuinely been our busiest month ever at Paws & Play for which we’re so grateful for! 🫶

We passed our annual state inspection yesterday! 🎉🐾

A lot of folks don’t realize that boarding & daycare kennels like Paws & Play are required to be licensed and inspected every single year by the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship.

Inspections are unannounced, and inspectors check things like -
🏡 Facility and den conditions
🧹 Sanitation and cleanliness
📋 Recordkeeping and compliance

Compliant means we’re meeting the state’s standards for how animals in our care are housed, fed, and cared for, though the quality of care we offer goes beyond the state required minimums.

There’s a side of dog boarding & daycare that people don’t usually see.

We don’t just care for your dogs and cats while you’re away. We become part of their world, and sometimes, part of yours. Most of the time that means slobbery dog kisses, joyful tail wags, and pleasant conversations at check-in and out. But sometimes it means saying goodbye in ways we never expected. 💔

This week we had the privilege of caring for one of our regulars, after losing his person unexpectedly. I (Katie) lost my Grandma, my person, only last week so Redman and I got to navigate through grief together. Tyler and I loved on him every day until his grandparents were able to find a new home for him. I know he helped us as much as we helped him during this time. We gave him a nice bath before he left so he would smell nice and fresh for his new humans. We don’t know if this is a good-bye or a see you later. We just hope his new family loves him the way his last one did. 🫶

This career gives us so much joy. It also asks us to hold space for loss sometimes, for dogs, for cats, for the people who love them. We don’t often talk about that side much. But it’s real, and it’s part of why we do what we do the way we do it. 🩵
