Interesting research.

šŸ• A new study from the RVC has revealed that three popular designer Poodle-crossbreeds (often generically called Doodles), Cockapoos, Labradoodles and Cavapoos, often display higher levels of undesirable behaviour than their purebred parent breeds. As the first UK study of its kind, these findings challenge widespread public perceptions that these Doodle breed dogs are easier to train or especially suited to family homes with children compared to purebred dogs. The results also provide vital information which can assist prospective owners deciding which type of dog to welcome into their family.

We are excited to announce our Annie (Choctaw Wind's First Cowgirl) finished her championship in grand style with a 5-point Major as Winner's Bitch at the Lone Star Borzoi Club Specialty! Huge thanks to Dr. Anne Midgarden for choosing our girl out of a stellar line up. Thanks also to our friends and mentors who have made this journey with our borzois so much fun, Mary Ann Rose, Linda Turner and Barb Ewing. Biggest thanks go to Laurie Courtney for allowing us to use her boy, Chase (GCHB Wolfblitz Running Down a Dream), in our first breeding!!

Stay tuned!! This girl is just getting started!

ANOTHER NATIONAL DOG SHOW IN THE BOOKS! And with that….the keyboard warriors as well.

A friendly reminder to everyone why these Shows are so important to the Sport of Pure Bred Dogs. The opportunity that we have to educate the general public is dwindling. We lost KC of Beverly Hills on tv as the Show was priced out of their indoor site and we all know that Benched Shows are a thing of the past. How else are we supposed to share with ā€˜The Smith Family’ why adding a Pure Bred Dog is so beneficial over a mutt.

By talking with the crowds and having a Nationally Broadcast Show, we have the ability to reach MILLIONS in a year. Please take a moment to THANK The Sponsors, Kennel Club Members and Volunteers for making this weekend happen. Our Sport is counting on it.

Also, please understand that while most of us realize that taking a show that recorded for 6+ hours, and turning it into 2 hours of television means that MANY dogs will not be shown…this show is EXTREMELY IMPORTANT to the survival of our Sport and Pure Bred Dogs. Complaining that it wasn’t long enough is in poor taste as the broadcast isn’t done for the Fancy but instead for the general public.

And yes, I love what I do especially for moments like this….GEORGE BEING GEORGE. šŸ˜‚

Best explanation of life with a hound!!

Best explanation of life with a hound!!

If you are not a hound person, it may be hard to understand, but this says it all.
A basic understanding... Regarding your hound dog that I think most people miss.
*Hounds do not believe that they need you. You are a convenience - like a favorite coffee cup or a favorite pair of shoes. If the cup is broken or the shoes are lost, we can get along just fine.
Let me explain:
Other dogs like Labs, Shepherds, herding breeds, and a host of others, are bred to work WITH man; neither can do their work without the other. Even the worst behaved Lab cares when mom and dad are annoyed. It is in their DNA to make man happy.
*Hounds... not so much.
Hounds have been bred to be taken out to the edge of the woods or field and be let loose to go out and do what they do with NO INSTRUCTION from the hunter or handler. They go out and do their thing, all on their own. They make their own decisions and do their own work. And when that work is done and they have found their quarry, they command/call the hunter to come to them with those beautiful voices. (Who is working for whom in that scenario?)
Do you see how your hound thinks differently?
Life with a Hound is far more like having a spouse than a dog. It is far more of a "cooperative effort" with all the give and take that implies. Hounds are not going to do what you say just because you have said it. You are secondary to their desire. There has to be something in it for them. There has to be a trade off. If there is no reward or benefit for the Hound, the Hound cares little what you are asking him/her to do. People incorrectly refer to this as being stubborn - or worse, stupid. Hounds are actually neither of those things - they are just independent and cunning. They prioritize things differently than do other breeds. They prioritize differently and *you* are not always their priority. This is EXACTLY AS THEY SHOULD BE. They were bred to be this way. It is all necessary to be a Houndy Dawg.
When working with a Hound you have to always be thinking:
How do I make myself the priority?
What do I have to give this dog to make me more important than what it smells - or wants? (and do not expect that anything will ever be 100% successful every time - always be looking for your Hound to act like a Hound.)
We humans always think we are in charge of things. We think that we are top of the chain, the head honchos ... and we naturally approach training our dogs and living with our dogs this way - as though we are in charge.
Your Hound doesn't see it that way.
Your Hound - at best - sees you as a family member or as a sibling (if you are very fortunate - as a parent). Do you walk into your sister or brother's house, start barking orders and they hop to?
Mostly your Hound sees you as a good friend. And what do we do with our friends? When a friend does something for us, we return those favors. There is give and take. When a friendship is out of balance - when one friend takes and takes but does not give - the friendship suffers. It is okay for one friend to be the strong friend - the dominant friend in the partnership -- -but it is *always* a partnership.
Hounds are happiest when their humans are humble.
PS ...
I did not write this but I found it to be very true……

The Chickasha Dog Show last weekend was another great one for the Choctaw Wind kiddos!
Tatianna (Off Road's Once Upon A Time Princess) racked up some more points towards her GCHB going Best Opposite and Select Bitch.
Mishka (Novgorod Ulric Mishka Sergeivich @ Choctaw Wind) finished his championship in grand style, even coming home with an "extra" major.
Annie (Choctaw Wind's First Cowgirl) got a third 3-point major. She needs 4 more points to finish at 11 months old!
Arina (Choctaw Wind's First Heart) went Winners Bitch and Best of Winners on Thursday for another 2 points. She is shown and loved by her bestest buddy, Gavin Akins
Auggie (Chase Farm Argyl Voiturette at Choctaw Wind) came home with Best of Breed over Lia (Cu Seilge Cluich A-Rithist) who won the other 3 days.
Huge thanks to the judges who chose our kids in a well-stacked competition. Thanks also to breeders Lyn Hoflin, Linda Turner, Johanna Hanson and Theresa Crawford for entrusting us with these wonderful dogs. Great BIG thanks to Lindsay Hausted Akins, Chris Chapman for helping us juggle dogs while we were in and out of the ring.
