Off leash skills are more about who you are and how you are than what you do.

If you are centered and regulated, you are more likely to be able to be present to the environment and the dogs.

If you are present, you can delight in nature and in the dogs. You can be attuned, authentically sharing in all that the environment provides.

Dogs know if you're faking interest to "do it right" or to get something from them. Consistent authenticity helps them know you mean it when you say yes AND when you say no.

Saying no to one behavior means thousands of other behaviors are a yes! The alternative is physical restriction where only a few behaviors can now be on the table for them.

Want to learn more? The Off Leash Freedom Summit is full but you can still check out the website or the Forrest School for Dogs website and let us know that you want to be notified about future events. You can also join the Forrest School for Dogs Patreon.

We've chosen the 12 people to be a part of the Off Leash Freedom Summit. It was hard!

Notifications go out today, but first, the pups needed their hike. Duke was thrilled that we found blueberries. He can pick them himself but really enjoys that I will pick them for him.

This interaction isn't about using food to make him think I'm interesting. It's about being the kind of person that is paying attention to things that are important to him.

Natural environments provide a wealth of opportunities to notice things that dogs do care about. It's a great place to have these conversations.

Don't get me wrong, another part of success in off leash skills is your dog knowing that you will enforce the things you say need to happen.

But the foundation is built here.

If they don't think you get them, they won't care what you think about them doing or not doing the things required for safe freedom.

On to office time. Watch your inbox! Those who didn't get in this time around, damn we're sorry. We wanted you all! Until next time.
