🐶 HELP WANTED: Must love animals... and cleaning🐾

Are you a fan of fur, purrs, and the occasional game of "guess that smell?" McDowell County Animal Shelter is hiring an Animal Shelter Attendant—aka professional pooper scooper, belly rubber, and all-around hero.

📋 Duties include:
✔️ Cleaning like your grandma’s watching
✔️ Lifting anything from 5 lbs of fluff to 75 lbs of “I swear he’s part hippo”
✔️ Handling money, keeping accurate records and saying “Awwww!” every 6 minutes
✔️ Dealing with the public—whether it’s answering phones, helping someone meet their new best friend, or explaining (again) why you can’t adopt a raccoon
✔️ Must be comfortable with animals, office machines, cleaning chemicals, and the smell of wet dog (it was never a phase, it’s a lifestyle)

💪 Qualifications:
• High school diploma or GED
• Basic computer skills (can you find the cat videos?)
• Valid NC driver’s license
• General knowledge of animals and their care (knowing the difference between a cat and raccoon helps)

🗓 Weekend hours? Yep, but we promise the wagging tails are worth it.

A Common Question We Get:

“Why does my dog have eye gunk, and how can I clean it?”

Yes, we do offer a product that helps with smelly or crusty eye discharge.

With my experience as a groomer and former vet tech, I can tell you this can be caused by many things—like allergies (indoor or outdoor), food, or water. It could also be medical, such as dry eye, glaucoma, cataracts, ulcers, or an eye infection.

Important: We’re not veterinarians, so if the issue is severe, always consult your vet.

But keep in mind—groomers often see your dog more regularly than a vet does!

At Dawn Campbell’s Grooming, we use a gentle, great-smelling face scrub that’s safe to use around the eyes. It helps clean and remove that eye gunk.

We’re also happy to show you how to use it at home. Don’t hesitate to ask—I’m always here to help you care for your fur babies! 🐾💕

🇺🇸🐾 4th of July Safety Tips for Your Pup 🐾🇺🇸

When we gear up for fireworks and fun, our dogs are often stressed—and sadly, many go missing. In fact, shelters report a 30–60% jump in lost pets between July 4–6, making July 5 the busiest intake day of the year. Even more startling: 1 in 5 dogs goes missing after big fireworks displays.

That means thousands of terrified pups bolt from homes and yards, overwhelming shelters and rescue teams over the holiday weekend. Here’s how we can all help keep them safe:

🎆 Keep pets indoors – Make sure they’re inside well before fireworks begin.

🔒 Secure fences, doors & windows – Anxiety causes dogs to escape through even small gaps.

💡 Create a calm zone – A safe, quiet space with white noise, music, crates, and familiar toys.

🆔 Update tags & microchip info – It triples the chance of recovery; you want your contact info current.

🚫 Skip BBQ scraps – Many foods that smell yummy to us are toxic to dogs.

🎇 Avoid fireworks displays – Keep them at home, not at fireworks shows, where loud bangs are magnified.

🌡️ Stay cool – Be mindful of heat and hydration, especially during afternoon BBQs.

Let’s do our part to prevent our dogs from becoming part of this heartbreaking statistic. Share these tips and make sure everyone in your community is informed.
