💚💚Green flags in a riding instructor💚💚

Just because someone can ride, doesn’t mean they can teach.

I see a lot of people trying to find somewhere to start, especially parents who are new to the horse world, and it can be hard to tell what’s actually good vs what just looks good online or for a lesson or two.

Here’s some green flags of what I’d look for in an instructor:

• Your kid is learning more than just riding.
They should be catching, grooming, tacking up, helping, learning responsibility—not just hopping on and off.

• The instructor lets them figure some things out.
Not throwing them to the wolves—but not fixing everything instantly either. That’s how confidence actually gets built.

• Safety is just how things are done.
Helmets, horse matches, rules… not chaotic, not rushed, not “we’ll deal with it if something happens.”

• They explain things.
Not just “do this, do that.” Kids should understand what they’re doing and why it matters.

• Corrections aren’t mean.
This sport is humbling enough. You can be firm without making kids feel small.

• They care about the basics more than winning.
Quick ribbons are easy. A solid foundation takes time.

• The horses look good.
This one tells you everything. Healthy, calm, taken care of horses = a program that actually cares.

• Kids stick around.
That says a lot.

• And the trainer is still learning too.
Nobody knows it all in this industry—and the good ones will be the first to say that.

At the end of the day, a good program isn’t just making riders…
it’s building confident, capable kids who learn how to work, respect animals, and handle hard things.

That’s what actually matters.🐎

The weather is warming up around here, finally! We are looking forward to a horse-tacular year, filled with making memories with our equine and human friends at the barn.
We have availability Monday and Thursday for a weekly riding spot in group lessons. Don’t miss out on the opportunity for your child to horse around and learn correct and safe horsemanship and riding skills with other horse crazy kids! 🐎

AQHA Holly aka DUNITLIKESIS is checking all the boxes here. She is the type that would be a perfect project horse for a teenager. Just easy going. She is a horse that was born broke; Safe, smart, considerate, calm, and she is ready to be started this May. Born May 1, 2024. She is going to be so cool. 🩷

Scooter and Zipcord are geldings to their core.. they are playing 80% of their time, and they’ll play for half an hour straight sometimes!🙈 if they’re not playing, they’re eating.

During this extreme cold we are experiencing in western Kentucky, having a warm dry place for your horse to get out of the weather, and providing fresh, unfrozen water and plenty of hay are some of the top priorities to keep your your horses healthy and comfortable.

I feed a grass mix hay off a big bale loose in their pastures, and have high quality Timothy and Alfalfa to feed in our Hay Chix nets. I’ve had many of these nets for over three years, with very rough, playful horses and they’ve held up great. Totally worth the money!

We have plans to build a hay barn, but until then our Shelter Logic 12X20 garage-in-a-box works wonders. We got this from tractor supply on sale a few years ago, and only just had to replace the cover this year. These things are worth the money because of the ability to order replacement covers and pieces when they break or are damaged, as things on the farm typically do. If you’re tired of dealing with tarping your hay, and it blowing it off in storms and your hundreds of dollars of hay getting destroyed, just like I was, go ahead and buy this and thank me later. This is an affordable solution for a small operation.

When this truck pulls in, you know you’re good. 🌾❄️

We finally got some warmer weather and sunshine today, and with that comes the ability to clean the paddocks and pastures.💩
What normally takes an hour a day, will most likely take the whole day. What a life! So thankful for the tractor and the husband.🤭
