When not in the bright lights of a reining arena, Christine Troutman can be found working as a physician beneath the bright lights of a doctorโs office.
Born and raised in Wisconsin, Troutman went to college and medical school in the midwest, where she still currently resides as an obstetrician gynecologist. While going to school at the University of Wisconsin River Falls launched her professional career, it also deepened her love for the reining industry, as she got to learn and ride from Larry Kasten, a very accomplished reining horse trainer.
โHorses have always been my place to breathe โ always, forever. I have been so fortunate to have amazing people in my life that have allowed me to keep my horses through all of those stages of education and during intense years of workโฆ Really, really great friends and mentors who always helped me along the way to make sure that I could keep horses in my life,โ Troutman said.
While Troutman missed the Derby Finals at this yearโs NRBC, she is sticking around to support her son, who is 10 and competing in the youth classes on Troutmanโs former Derby horse. While balancing such an intensive career and passion is challenging, itโs also rewarding.
โMost things that are worthwhile are quite challenging. And I'm always grateful for the education that I have when it comes to being able to provide service, not just to my community, but to my friends and everybody around me. I feel like that's really what life's about โ finding a way we can provide a service, and I'm grateful that I can.โ
On the professional side, Troutman strives to provide a service through her mission of ensuring health care is available to women no matter where theyโre located on the map.
โI've become very passionate about working to maintain access for women's health care in rural places. It has become a very interesting topic nationally and internationally to maintain access to care in rural places and particularly for women's health. And so that's been a really fun, interesting, new adventure,โ Troutman said.
While Troutmanโs impressive ambitions here at the NRBC and in the office couldnโt be tackled without a dedicated work ethic, she said her success isnโt a solo act.
โI want to thank the Tremblay (Performance Horses) team and Diamond Dub (Quarter Horses) and all of our coachesโฆ (As well as) Jeff and Larry Kasten and the Smith Ranch. I also want to thank the NRBC and the NRHA and everybody involved because this is a well-oiled machineโฆ It's always a marvel, and I'm grateful to be here.โ
