Looking back on the Charlie Kirk Memorial Race, our hearts are still so full. Producing this event was one of the greatest honors we’ve ever had, and being able to race in Charlie’s memory brought an overwhelming amount of purpose, love, and unity to every moment of that weekend.

One of the most meaningful highlights was presenting TPUSA with the projected donation keepsake check. It symbolized not just the generosity of our community, but the impact Charlie continues to make. As we finish preparing the official donation check, we couldn’t be more excited to deliver it to them this coming week. Knowing that this contribution will carry forward work that mattered deeply to Charlie makes it even more special.

We are still so incredibly thankful to Turning Point USA and Turning Point Action for attending the race. Having both organizations present truly touched our hearts. Their presence brought warmth, respect, and support that meant more to us than we could ever express. It was an honor to share that arena and that moment with them.

We also want to express our deep gratitude to The Rowdy Rose, Inc. for donating the breathtaking buckles for this event. Even TPUSA and Turning Point Action complimented how stunning they were and rightfully so. Katie’s generosity is unmatched, and the extraordinary craftsmanship, artistry, and powerful detail in these buckles created awards that were truly unforgettable. The quality and emotion behind her work added so much to honoring Charlie’s legacy.

Good evening. First, we want to sincerely apologize for the delay in posting updates after the race. When we returned home, our family experienced a medical emergency that required our full attention. Thank you all for your patience and understanding.

We want to thank everyone for their patience on Day 1. Due to an unexpected staffing change with our saddlebook volunteer becoming unavailable mid race Saturday we had to pivot fast.
A HUGE thank you to our President, Brook, and our friend Elaine who has never worked with SaddleBook for stepping in midday and running with it. They handled the chaos like absolute champs and kept things moving without a single bobble.

Day 2 was much smoother, we averaged 45 runners per hour, and the day flowed beautifully.

We were incredibly blessed by the amount of positive feedback we received throughout the weekend. Many of you asked if we plan to produce more events, and the answer is YES. We already had several events in the works before Charlie Kirk was assassinated, and we jumped in quickly to produce this memorial race. Your encouragement confirmed that we’re on the right path, thank you for your support.

No show will ever be perfect, but we promise to always strive to be the best we can be and to keep improving.

A MASSIVE thank you goes out to Keith Kuttler Photos, and the tractor drivers who jumped in to set barrels far more times than they should have needed to. We ended up with multiple volunteers not showing up as promised, and a group that were setting barrels for us Saturday who left a little early Sat and was not able to come back Sun, leaving us in a bind. These tractor guys/gal and Keith truly saved the day. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you.

We had a great weekend last weekend and will be making a few adjustments moving forward.

For those asking if this will be an annual event the answer is that is the plan! We requested annual approval when we filed to host at HSPEC.

We’ve received several messages asking whether there was any potential exposure risk from our event last weekend. We want to be fully transparent and give everyone the most accurate information possible.

As with any open event where horses travel from different areas, there is always a general possibility of exposure. Our race included horses from multiple states, as well as horses who had traveled from the the GCPRA Finals. We naturally do not have visibility into every facility or event those horses may have traveled to beforehand.

That being said, here is the important part:

✅ We have not been notified of any horses showing symptoms
✅ No owners have reported any concerns with their horses following our event so far
✅ There have been no positive cases linked to our race or the GCPRA Finals, that we are aware of. AND no current positives cases in Arizona so far, from what I know.

At this time, we have zero indications of any issues connected to our event.

We always encourage every rider to monitor their horses closely after any travel or competition, practice good biosecurity, and reach out to their veterinarian with any concerns.

Thank you all for staying proactive and for doing your part to keep our horses safe. We appreciate the care this community shows for one another and our equine partners.

🚨 IMPORTANT HEALTH ALERT FOR ARIZONA HORSE OWNERS 🚨
Desert Mountain Equine is closely monitoring reports of Equine Herpesvirus Type 1 (EHV-1) cases confirmed in Texas and linked to recent multi-state horse events. We want our clients and community to stay proactive and prepared.

Your horse’s safety is always our priority, and staying ahead of potential outbreaks makes a world of difference.

📌 What is EHV-1 and why does it matter?

EHV-1 is a contagious virus that can cause:
• Respiratory illness
• Abortion in pregnant mares
• Neurologic disease (Equine Herpes Myeloencephalopathy, EHM)

Neurologic cases can show: hind-end weakness, stumbling or incoordination, urine dribbling, and in severe cases, difficulty rising or inability to stand.

✅ What You Can Do Right Now to Protect Your Horses

1. Take temperatures twice daily.
A fever (101.5°F / 38.6°C or higher) is often the very first red flag.

2. Isolate any horse with fever, nasal discharge, cough, or neurologic signs.
Call Desert Mountain Equine immediately if you notice anything concerning.

3. Separate horses returning from events or travel for at least 14 days.
Extend to 21–28 days if they were potentially exposed.

4. Strengthen barn biosecurity:
• No nose-to-nose contact
• Disinfect buckets, tack, trailers, and grooming equipment
• Wash hands between horses
• Use dedicated clothing/boots around sick, new, or recently traveled horses

5. Limit hauling or unnecessary travel during periods of heightened risk.

6. Stay current on vaccinations.
While vaccines cannot prevent the neurologic form, they do help reduce viral shedding and respiratory disease.

• Tail tone changes or urine dribbling

• Recently attended events
• Traveled out of state
• Been exposed to a horse with fever, respiratory signs, or confirmed EHV-1
