When a horse comes home from injury or surgery, stall rest is usually the first step. While rest is necessary, too much inactivity can lead to stiffness, muscle loss, compensation patterns, reduced circulation, and a slower overall recovery.

That’s where my customized at home rehabilitation programs come in.

Each program is individually built around your horse’s diagnosis, surgical history, movement patterns, and veterinary guidance. I collaborate with your veterinarian to ensure the plan is safe, structured, and supports proper healing while maintaining healthy movement throughout recovery.

These programs are best suited for committed owners who are actively involved in their horse’s rehab. Success requires consistency, patience, and follow-through with exercises, handling, monitoring progress, and basic care tasks like bandage changes or therapy routines when needed.

Programs may include:
• Customized rehab exercises
• Guided hand walking and progression plans
• Red light therapy protocols
• Cold therapy guidance
• Stretching and mobility work
• Gait and movement review
• Video feedback and coaching
• Ongoing adjustments based on progress
• Vet collaboration when appropriate

Progress is monitored remotely through video submissions, updates, and scheduled check-ins to ensure your horse is healing safely and effectively.

For owners who don’t have the time or capacity to manage an intensive rehab program at home, an in house rehabilitation option is also available.

Every horse heals differently….
and every rehab plan should reflect that.

If your horse is recovering from injury, surgery, or prolonged stall rest, reach out to find the right rehabilitation option for you both.

This is why observation during bodywork is so important.

As I worked around her withers and along the rib cage, she became increasingly sensitive and began lifting her leg in response to pressure. Rather than viewing it as “bad behavior,” I view it as information.

Protective responses like this can indicate tension, restriction, compensation patterns, soreness, or areas where the horse does not yet feel safe or comfortable with touch.

The goal isn’t to force the horse through the reaction. The goal is to listen to what the body is communicating and work within the horse’s threshold while gradually improving comfort and mobility.

Rehabilitation and bodywork are rarely just physical processes…. they also involve rebuilding trust and confidence within the body.

After a little time away, what a blessing it was to be back with horses under saddle. I truly wasn’t expecting them both to perform the way they did after sitting for about 2 weeks while we welcomed our newborn into the world. It honestly felt like they had just been saddled yesterday.

The Lord blessed us with beautiful skies last night, and everything just felt peaceful and right. Moments like that remind me that with patience, consistency, and the right training, you can build results that last. Grateful for the horses, my family, and God’s blessings through it all.

“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters.” — Colossians 3:23 ✝️

People often argue they don’t want a vet doing dental or farrier work because those aren’t their specialties.

But what about rehabilitation?

Vets are incredible for diagnosis, imaging, surgery, and acute care… and some absolutely do provide rehabilitation programs. However, in my experience, most injury protocols I’ve seen have simply been: “stall rest and they’ll be fine in a few months.”

But stall rest isn’t rehabilitation.
Stall rest is restriction to prevent further injury.

When humans break a bone, tear tissue, or have surgery, we don’t just sit in bed until it heals and immediately return to full activity. We go to physical therapy. We progressively strengthen tissue, restore mobility, improve circulation, and rebuild function so the body heals with strength, not weakness and compensation.

Why are we not applying the same mindset to our horses?

Rehabilitation should include intentional, controlled movement throughout healing:

• Hand walking
• Controlled loading
• Stretching
• Progressive exercises
• Circulation support

Without that, tissues may heal, but they often heal without proper conditioning. That’s when we start seeing weakness, stiffness, compensation patterns, re-injury, or damage to the opposite limb from overload.

Therapies like red light therapy, cryotherapy, compression, and controlled exercise can make a huge difference in recovery. Red light is one of the best investments owners can make for at-home rehab support. Cold hosing and icing can give some relief, but true Cryotherapy reaches therapeutic temperatures safely and consistently to help manage inflammation more effectively.

Healing isn’t just about waiting for tissue to close.

It’s about restoring strength, function, and long term soundness.
