A Canine Experience

A Canine Experience 1+ hr hikes/swims in small curated groups, boarding, basic training. Positive methods only! This keeps your pup, mine, and my guest dogs safe and healthy.

We take dog and human-friendly pups who are up to date on vaccinations (including Leptospirosis and Bordatella) and on year-round, vet-prescribed flea/tick/heartworm meds. We DO NOT take raw fed dogs (risk of serious transmissible disease to my dog and family), brachycephalic dogs (cannot breathe well enough to safely exercise), intact adult dogs (juvenile/adolescent may be okay but notify me firs

t for a trial). We offer size/breed/temperament compatible groups of 2-3 dogs the opportunity for supervised off-leash play and on-leash swims and hikes through fields and woods. We practice trail manners and recall on every hike.

We're already finding ticks after walks in the woods - be sure to check your dog thoroughly after hikes, and discuss prevention with your veterinarian.

Another intro - Gus is not just new to camp, he’s new to everything. He’s about 6 months old and will be a very big boy when all grown up. His mom is quite dog-savvy and knows how important it will be for him to be a well socialized guy. His first day of camp was with amazing camp counselor Auggie, who was very tolerant of those sharp puppy teeth while also setting some appropriate boundaries. Gus did great, he’s a typical puppy with natural instincts to follow his people and dog friends closely. We are teaching him to climb up and helping him land gently when he jumps down. He will be a great trail dog in no time.

Meet Ivy. She is a new camper who is looking forward to building her confidence in new situations. She had a lot of novel interactions during her first day of camp with camp counselor Auggie and new friend Gusto. With time and patience, we hope to replace her current feelings of DANGER! each time she encounters something new to something more like THAT’S INTERESTING or OH, WHATEVER. She did learn to hop over a giant fallen tree trunk today, with some encouragement from Auggie.

Welcome, Bodhi, to camp!

Bodhi is a handsome guy who can be a little suspicious in new situations. Thankfully, he LOVES treats and warms up quickly. His intro camp session went great, we watched people and dogs pass by on trail and he was happy to ignore them and gobble his treat scatter. We will work on reinforcing his handler focus, keeping him engaged and busy on the trails and teaching him a great recall while we slowly integrate him with the camp counselor dogs.

Boarding is available for select dogs that are part of our regular camp program.

What makes A Caine Experience boarding different? I offer boarding for only one dog at a time (2 if from same household), camp is included for each day of boarding, all feeding is done via dog/breed-specific enrichment and at no time is a boarder left alone in the same space with my resident dog, as safety is always prioritized.

Welcome new camper Nola to A Canine Experience!

She’s two and did great on her first outing with camp counselor Auggie. Nola is not super confident around other dogs - she gets skittish and jumps away if they get close, so we made sure Auggie gave her plenty of space. By the end of the hike Nola was much more comfortable and her personal space bubble was much smaller. She quickly relaxed and really enjoyed herself. She has natural tendencies for check-ins and recall and is handler-focused. She will quickly gain the confidence and skills necessary to be a trail dog.

Meet SKY

We have a new camper named Sky, a beautiful Husky. She’s everything you’d expect: athletic, confident and independent, but also very friendly and social. She really uses her nose on the trails - she managed to find a few dead mice and star nosed shrews on our first day out. We will start integrating her with camp counselor dogs with similar play styles.

Meet Oscar, a young German Shorthaired Pointer. This breed is known for endless energy and a certain intensity and Oscar did not disappoint. He is big, bouncy, athletic, and confident.
Oscar did everything I asked of him on our solo hike, easily and happily. He will need another dog to run with to really stretch his legs, so we will start slowly integrating him with some camp counselor dogs who also love to run.
Kudos to his owner for recognizing and meeting the high exercise needs of his breed.

Welcome COOPER: a sweet, mixed breed tripawd boy. I was a little hesitant when his parents first contacted me - I was worried hiking would be too much for him, so I inquired about any signs of pain or osteoarthritis. His awesome dad takes him on regular hikes, though, so he is well conditioned and accustomed to the trails. He already has nice trail manners and recall, and he handled a solo one hour hike really well. He will be paired with camp counselor dogs who will leave him alone so he doesn’t get jostled.
