⚠️PROTECT OUTDOOR ANIMALS: Temperatures are expected to reach below zero with the wind chill, along with several inches of snow accumulation over the weekend. These conditions are extremely dangerous for certain outdoor animals, depending on their species, breed, health, and age, especially without adequate protection.
➡️For outdoor dogs, provide a shelter elevated off the ground with a floor, three sides, a roof, and a doorway large enough for easy access. Add a windbreak and cover the entrance with a material flap that does not obstruct the dog’s entry or exit. Avoid using fabric or blankets, which can freeze and make the dog colder. Instead, use straw inside and around the shelter for insulation and warmth. Do not use hay, as it can become damp and ineffective. The shelter should be large enough for the dog to stand, turn, and lie down comfortably while retaining body heat. Confirm that any newly added material over the doorway does not scare the dog or prevent it from entering. Always provide unfrozen water to keep the dog hydrated and offer extra nutritional food, as animals burn more energy to stay warm. Check tethers to ensure they are not frozen to the ground, restricting movement or access to shelter.
If you are able to bring them inside a warm structure or home, please do.
🛑 Yes, we understand there are certain breeds that enjoy the snow and cold weather. WE GET IT. Keep in mind that Ohio law doesn't define shelter based on breed type or species, but requires access to adequate shelter whether they use it or not. Regardless of the breed, their overall age, health, and other factors may determine their ability to sustain protection from certain inclement weather based on the length of exposure.
➡️For large animals, provide species-appropriate shelters along with adequate food and unfrozen water.
