Happy Fun Fact Friday!

Today let's lwarn about the origin of the chicken. No, this is not the discussion of the chicken or the egg, though evolutionarily it would be the egg. Lets talk about where in the world the chicken came from.

Chickens, (Gallus gallus domesticus) are believed to have been domesticated 7,000-10,000 years ago in Southeast Asia and Oceania.

How do we know?
Modern chicken breeds actually have multiple origins as they are believed to be the result of hybridization (when two different species, not breeds, mate and produce offspring) of two or more bird species.

Who did we domesticate?
The main bird species that resulted in the bird species we call chickens was the Southeast Asian Red Junglefowl (gallus gallus). So chickens came from Southeast Asia however, based on a few characteristics chickens have but the Red Junglefowl does not and some DNA analysis, scientists believe the chicken hybridized with Grey Junglefowl (Gallus sonnaratii) of India. A few other hybridization events likely occured with other Gallus species.

Bonus: the name gallus is from the latin word gallus which translates to rooster. So the scientific name of chickens means 'rooster rooster domesticated'.
