Today's topic is ear health and proper cleaning.
General ear cleaning/inspection is not just about keeping your dog's ears clean. It can also help in the early detection of ear infections, ear mites, or other common issues. Healthy ears should look pink, odorless, and free of dirt/discharge.
To properly clean your dog's ear:
1) Fill the ear canal with a canine specific ear cleaner.
2) Message at the base of ear canal to help loosen any dirt/debris.
3) Allow the dog to shake their head. Not only will some solution come out but it will help dislodge any loose material.
4) Gently wipe the inside of the dog's ear with a cotton ball or cotton pad.
5) Use a soft towel or cotton pad to wipe the flaps of the ear.
6) Repeat on the other side.
For dogs who swim frequently or swim with floppy ears, after each swim session:
1) Towel dry the dog's ears
2) Use a dog specific ear drying drop to help dry out the ear.
Frequency of ear cleaning needs can change from dog to dog. Inspecting your dog's ears once a week is a great place to start.
