Yawning - what does it mean?

Horses yawn to release physical or emotional tension, stretch their jaw muscles, or transition into relaxation.

Tension Release: Yawning can indicate the processing of new concepts or let go of stress after training, bodywork, or grooming.

Relaxation: Showing a drop in energy after exercise or when settling down.

Anticipation and Routine: Waiting for feed time or as the bridle and bit are removed.

Social Connection: Mirroring other horses through contagious yawning.

Part 3 of the 1st session to jumping a single barrel. The part where I got greedy and asked for a little too much.

I'm human, and I do human things. One of those things being, we always seem to want more, and often too soon with our horses. In this session, Leo had given a great try with a baby jump thru the gap so, naturally, I was excited and thought let's try a smaller gap thinking he'd just jump the barrels. All in the 1st session. He clearly had other feelings about it.

He got frustrated, and things fell apart - quite often that's how training goes. It's not all highlight reels. I had to reset and help Leo work through his frustration, and in the end got him back and engaged. He didn't jump, and that's ok. That's not really what the lesson was about. It's about building his confidence/trust in my leadership, and a lesson for me to slow down. That trust is built slowly, and by letting him know I'm not going to push him off the ledge. I'm still learning, too.

It's like the release is almost too big to get out. 😄

This feedback was nice to see as this client usually saves her processing for afterwards. 😊❤️
