We have loved seeing our MVS family grow over the years…but now we turn our attention & excitement to Dr. Matthews and her husband as we prepare to watch their family grow. 🐣🍼👶🏻🩷💙

Please join in our excitement during this special time; we are ALL patiently awaiting baby’s arrival.

All that to be said, we are thrilled to introduce Dr. David Wilbur, DVM to the MVS team, temporarily, alongside Dr.T.
Dr. Wilbur will be filling in for Dr. Matthews during the month of January…don’t worry she’s not going anywhere!

We are still operating as normal, M-F (9-5), during this time! Our emergency services may be limited but our emergency line is still available 24/7 to speak with our on-call technician and doctor.

Please bear with us during this time as we prepare for change, growth and most importantly a very special baby. Walter here is also very excited to be a big brother….and ‘borrow’ lots of baby toys.

🚨MVS is aware of the announcements regarding a recent outbreak of EHV-1 originating from a barrel event in Waco, Tx🚨

We are here for any and all questions and concerns but want to provide a little bit of information.

1) What is EHV-1?
- EHV-1 or Equine Herpes Virus-Myeloencephalopathy is a neurological strain of Equine Herpes Virus, that can be fatal. Symptoms include neurological changes/deficits, fever, nasal discharge & cough.

2) Booster vaccinations are currently highly recommended for everyone!
- Vaccinations, while not perfect, can help minimize symptoms and decrease viral shedding. Even if your horse was knowingly exposed to EHV-1 within 2 days time, boosters are still indicated.

3) What can you do to minimize risk?
- STAY HOME! Minimize travel with your horses as much as possible during this time. This virus can lay dormant in many horses and often times viral spreading is silent. Avoid horse shows, events, or “play dates” to the best of your ability. Minimize cross contamination of buckets, tack, brushes etc. between horses (even on the same property).

4) Monitor for….
- Fever 🤒! Fevers are typically the first “silent” symptom to appear. Monitoring your horses temperature 1-2x daily is key. Any temperature above 102.5° should be reported immediately.
- Nasal Discharge & Coughing
- Weakness, trembling or loss of coordination

We know times like these can cause uncertainty; Matthews Vet Services is here to help where we can. Don’t hesitate to reach out with questions or concerns.

We are closely monitoring the containment level and guidelines directly from the Texas Animal Health Commission (TAHC).

Please report any symptoms immediately to MVS or your primary care veterinarian for guidance. Reach out at (512)-575-3231 with questions, concerns or inquiries to schedule an on-farm booster vaccination appointment!

BOO! 🦇👻🎃
Happy Halloween from MVS!

MVS has a couple requests for those furry pets partaking in tonight’s festivies (and even those not!)

1) Ensure that any dog involved in your spoooooky celebration is accounted for, secure and SAFE! (securing them inside to prevent a “trick or treat dine & dash”, properly fitted harnesses or collars and vigilance!)
2) When taking your dog out tonight (and even tomorrow morning) please be vigilant about what they are sniffing. It is possible it could be a piece of candy from the Halloween festivities.

🍭🍫🍬Kids are notorious for dropping things (especially with intricate costumes on) and chocolate is toxic to dogs! Even a few ounces can be catastrophic; Couple that with a dog that will eat anything - rouge chocolate (or any candy for that matter) can be extremely dangerous!

If you find yourself in a situation where your furry friend has eaten a piece of chocolate, please refer to the toxicity calculator below and monitor for symptoms!
Symptoms include: Persistent vomiting, diarrhea, anxious/agitated behavior, excessive panting, seizures and muscle rigidity.

Toxicity Calculator : https://

Please don’t hesitate to reach out to us here at MVS if you have any questions or are concerned about your pet! (Emergencies CALL 512-575-3232 ext.1)

Our second request is to….
Share all of those master disguise’s below!! We want to see ALL of the creative, scary and adorable costumes.

Wesley here is doing his best impression of a Gingerbread Man (although I think he got his holiday seasons mixed up) 🎃🎅🏻

🚨Attention Equine Owners! 🚨
Matthews Vet Services has been made aware of two positive West Nile cases in northwestern Texas.

We want you to be aware of the known severity and prevalence of this disease! It is spread via mosquitos 🦟 and can cause fatal neurological damage.

Don’t panic yet though! It is VERY preventable…the West Nile vaccination is a core part of our annual vaccine protocol. Many of our horses have received this in the form of the “CoreEQ” which is a combo vaccination including West Nile, Rabies and Encephalitis.

If it has been longer than 6 months since your horse (or donkey’s) West Nile/CoreEQ vaccination we strongly recommend a single booster vaccine! 💉🩺

Shoot us a text or call to schedule!

As we enter into summer we all know what time it is! 4th of July is coming up, and it’s the loudest holiday of the year! 🎆🎇🇺🇸

If your pet struggles with fear and anxiety during loud events such as fireworks, pool parties, or general fun please request your anxiety meds now! Summer fun is in full swing 🌴🦩☀️
Despite having only 3 legs Crunchy is ready to partaayyyy!! (even in his goofy blooper reel)

If your dog, cat, horses, or farmy critters need some oral preventative anxiety meds, give us a shout!

*As a reminder*
Please keep all dogs and cats indoors unless they are securely leashed! Fireworks can cause even the most confident dog or cat to become flighty. 💨
And monitor your pets around all of the smelly, delicious human food at those cookouts 🥩🍔🌭🎂🍦

MVS makes vet visits fun from day ONE!

10 week old ‘Lady Sif’ met Dr. Matthews and her technician Ally for the first time last week…and it’s safe to say she loved it! She immediately won over the team with her curiosity, kisses and those adorable ears!😍. She also, very quickly, approved of our snack offerings, Churu! (Our personal favorite). This provided an enticing and smelly distraction for her vaccinations. She received TWO of her very first puppy boosters and didn’t even blink an eye! A++

MVS provides a unique experience to start your furry friend off on the right foot…or should we say paw? 🐾 Vet visits don’t have to be scary; they are usually filled with snacks and snuggles! Our goal is to work WITH our patients; big and small, young and old.

In case you didn’t know, today is dedicated as ‘National, Fun at Work Day!’

It is impossible to NOT have fun EVERYDAY when we get to stare at these *adorable* faces!

As we wrap up the chaos of the new year and settle down into 2025; we hope these furry faces will put a smile on your face.

It’s time to bundle up, Texas!❄️☃️

MVS will be closed for all regular appointments on Thursday & Friday (1/9-1/10)…we will still be available for regular & emergency communication though!

For the safety of our doctors & technicians we are seeing emergency appointments on a case by case basis over the next few days. Please do still call us at “ext. 1” for emergencies!

As for our furry friends…they do pretty well in cold weather! But here are some things to keep in mind:
Dogs…
- Keep walks & potty breaks SHORT
- Use PET FRIENDLY salt only for de-icing
Cats…
- Keep indoor/outdoor cats INSIDE to the best of your ability
Horses…
- Allow 24/7 access to hay/forage
- Keep WATERPROOF blankets on
- Allow full access to shelter
- Regularly check & break frozen waters
- Monitor for shivering!
Goats…
