It’s no secret the economy is in the dump right now..Because of this, everyone and their brother has decided to try and make a quick buck. And majority of those people are doing so with horses, while forgetting that they are still living beings who deserve basic care and respect.
I’ve never been one to sugar coat things, or spare feelings. So I have no issue laying it out flat for you. If the OTTB “lesson horse” you’re selling is emaciated, that’s probably the only reason it’s actually a lesson horse. It’s amazing what proper nutrition can do to a horses energy level. If you advertise the horse as “no kick, no bite, no rear” and a buyer shows up to discover you’re scared of this horse because it’s dangerous, you should probably just kiss your reputation goodbye. If you haven’t even owned a horse for 24 hours and you already have it up for sale for triple what you paid for it, while also lying about its age, health status, and capabilities, word is going to get out and no body will want to do business with you ever again. And my all time favorite, “rescuing” horses from auctions just to throw them out in swampy pastures with minimal hay, hoof care, vet care, and rehabilitation plan to then advertise them a few weeks later for more money than you even put into them.
These animals are being treated like pawns in a chess game and I’m sick of it. I’m sick of seeing ribs and hips stick out on 6 year old horses because you’d rather feed the cheap low quality hay so that you’re able to make money at the end of the day. I’m sick of seeing people get hurt because their “lesson horse” just needed some proper care and now that it feels good it’s too much for the buyer to handle. I’m sick of hoof care and vet care being seen as optional. Aside from it being a sh*tty business practice, you’re being a sh*tty person in general.
Leave the buying/selling to the professionals. Find a different way to make ends meet without bringing an animals well being into it. It’ll catch up to you eventually.
