On Saturday and Sunday the Lancaster County, PA Animal Response Team - CART, in conjunction with the Brunnerville Fire Company, hosted a Large Animal Response course which was facilitated by Lancaster County Emergency Management Agency, Pennsylvania Animal Response Team, and sponsored by the South Central Task Force (SCTF). 17 students representing CART teams from Lancaster and York Counties, Brunnerville Fire, and the PA Animal Response Team were on hand to learn these skills.
Two instructors, Ed and Tammy, from Washington County Animal Response Team spent two days covering specific topics related to equine health and responses to various types of equine emergencies. For a majority of the course, the SCTF’s 700+ pound horse mannequin, named “Lucky”, was used for the practical portions of the course. Lucky was also affectionately named “Bolt” and “Mayo” by students throughout the class. Class-goers also had a chance to work with a live horse named “Diamond” who came from a nearby farm.
The final two evolutions involved assistance from
EAS Towing & Recovery using their 35 ton wrecker to lift the horse. Using a tow truck was a first for the instructors and we are thankful EAS was able to join us.
We are truly grateful for all the support offered by our partners to make this class happen. There’s no way we would be able to afford running a course like this on our own. We hope this is just the beginning of some great working relationships that will help make our team and mission successful!
