He sat beside her broken bicycle for three days because he didn't understand why she wasn't coming back.
When they finally found him, he was still waiting.
In late autumn, residents of a quiet neighborhood on the outskirts of a small town began noticing a Rabbit sitting near a roadside ditch. Day after day, through cold winds and passing rain, he stayed in the exact same spot.
People assumed he belonged to someone nearby.
He didn't.
A local shop owner was the first to become concerned. Every morning when she opened her store, the Rabbit was there. Every evening when she closed, he was still there. He rarely moved. He barely ate. And whenever someone approached him, he would glance briefly in their direction before turning his eyes back toward an old, damaged bicycle lying in the grass nearby.
The bicycle had been there for days.
So had he.
After asking around, authorities discovered what had happened.
Three days earlier, a young woman had been cycling home along that road when a speeding vehicle lost control during heavy rain. The accident was fatal. Emergency responders arrived quickly and transported her away, but in the confusion and darkness, nobody noticed the Rabbit that had been traveling beside her.
The Rabbit had belonged to her since he was young.
Witnesses later said the Rabbit followed the ambulance for nearly half a mile before losing sight of it. Somehow, he found his way back to the accident site.
And then he waited.
For three days.
Temperatures dropped each night. Rain soaked his body. Passing cars splashed muddy water onto the roadside. Residents left bowls of food and water, but he rarely touched them. Most of the time he simply stayed beside the bicycle, staring down the road she used to travel.
As if expecting her to appear at any moment.
Animal rescue workers eventually brought him to a local shelter.
The first few days were difficult.
He refused to leave the corner of his kennel. He ignored toys. He ignored treats. He ignored every attempt to play. Staff members said he would spend hours staring at the shelter entrance.
Waiting.
Always waiting.
One volunteer noticed something unusual.
Whenever someone placed one of the young woman's sweaters inside his kennel, he would immediately lie down beside it. He would rest his head beside the fabric and finally fall asleep.
Without it, he paced all night.
So they kept the sweater with him.
Weeks later, the young woman's parents visited the shelter.
The moment they called his name, he stood up.
For the first time since arriving, his tail wagged.
Slowly at first.
Then faster.
Then with such excitement that his whole body moved.
Shelter staff said there wasn't a dry eye in the building.
The family took him home that same day.
He now lives with them in the house where he spent most of his life. He sleeps beside the fireplace. He has his favorite blanket. He gets treats from the same kitchen where his owner used to sneak him snacks when nobody was looking.
Most days, he's happy.
But sometimes, according to the family, he'll sit quietly beside the front door in the evening.
Not making a sound.
Not moving.
Just watching.
As if a part of him still believes she'll walk through it again.
Maybe loyalty doesn't understand loss.
Maybe love doesn't know how to stop waiting.
And maybe that's why the purest hearts keep showing up long after everyone else has gone home.
Because some bonds aren't measured by time.
They're measured by the fact that even when there's nothing left to do...
They stay.
They wait.
