To New Puppy Owners

Safety

Hide electrical cords and cables, keep trash tightly closed, secure cleaning supplies. Keep clothes picked up and keep dangerous things in the home secured . Keep the toilet lid down

Exercise is Important

Take puppy on a walk to reduce energy first. Invite puppy into the home while on leash and establish it as your territory. Remain calm and practice “no touch, no talk, no eye contact” during introduction. Let puppy off leash when you get to the puppy’s bed. This tells puppy “this spot is yours” so pup can settle in to pup’s safe zone.

Routines

Establish and stick to regular schedule for walks, feeding, and playtime. See that puppy gets potty time every two to four hours at first, and five to thirty minutes after eating.

Discipline for Misbehaviors

Discipline your puppy only for a witnessed misbehavior. After the fact correction doesn't work. Stay calm and clean up. Your puppy will learn faster with positive reinforcement and become a respectful dog with your leadership.

Mouthing, Nipping, Jumping Up

Teach puppy what’s appropriate and what isn’t when they mouth, nip or jump up before being invited. Rough play is stopped and gets a puppy time-out. A properly trained and socialized dog makes a joyful family member.
