Today a Celebration of Life will honor a local hero to colony cats and animals of all kinds - Karen Dorsey.
Karen was a dear friend to me and a supporter of our rescue. I first met Karen over 5 years ago when I spotted a stray cat in the parking lot of a local shopping center. Many others had also spotted this kitty and Milo became something of a local celebrity as we worked to get him trapped. Through this I found that this sweet lady, Karen, fed him every day along with several other strays and cat colonies in this area. When Milo was finally trapped I immediately called her and she had me take him directly to her vet, Dr Cheema at Potomac Valley Vet, where she paid for Milo to be completely vetted. He then became my personal kitty. That began a friendship between us.
She would call me to take in kitties if I had room and she always covered their initial vet costs. Milo, Annie, Harley, Sissy and Socks all were Karen kitties 😻
Karen didn’t like text or email and when i shared updates on the kitties (pictures) they had to be sent to Mac 😊 After he passed, we would meet in the parking lot by Harris Teeter on her night run to the store so she could look at pictures 😻
Many of you may remember the kitten MacKinley that was found orphaned in a Walmart parking lot that we took in. She was named in honor of Karen’s husband, Mac, who had recently passed away.
Most times I would find Karen on her daily run to the pet store to buy food to distribute to those kind souls who helped her feed her colonies. Caring for others, human and animals, was her life. I would smile as she recounted the deer waiting for her to feed them at night and her raccoon friends that would check out the cat trees on her porch 🥰
Here are some memories from her obituary -
“Karen is remembered as more than a neighbor, friend, nurse, cat rescuer, and Lorton prison guard. Her love and care for Mac were extraordinary. She embraced every person she met and left an impression on each one. Everyone was her friend. Karen was well known for randomly dropping off little gifts. She would volunteer to help anytime and anyway possible. Her hats were her trademark and she was always easy to locate in a crowd. Not only did she feed stray cats but also provided them warmth and medical care when necessary. Her love of animals included cats, dogs, squirrels, raccoons, deer, mice, etc.
Karen was a strong, individualistic woman and was famous for having a lot of cats (5-8 at a time). She was always comical, outspoken, and active, full of humor, kindness, and a love for all animals, great and small.
Karen was always a delight to be around, and she had a hat for every occasion, whether it be a pool party, Oktoberfest, or the SF Regimental Birthday Ball.
Karen was always comical, adopted a slew of cats and many 10th Group bachelors for holiday dinners and was well known to the Fort Devens community for roller skating up the stairs of 10th Group HQ in an Easter Bunny suit, and Karen was rumored to drive like “The Little Old Lady from Pasadena”.
Additionally, Karen and Mac were always feeding the deer and other animals around their home in Woodbridge, even after Mac passed in 2023, Karen kept up the nighttime vigil they had maintained through the years.”
Karen was truly a good soul and will be so dearly missed.
Yesterday I had the opportunity to speak with Dr Cheema Potomac Valley Veterinary Hospital who Karen adored (both brothers - the dual Dr Cheemas 😊). Dr Cheema has taken care of several of our kitties also - in addition to the ones mentioned above, he has helped Little Bear, Marcelo, Sparrow, and others, and is the personal vet for Sawyer the therapy dog. Dr Cheema told me that Karen had asked if anything happened to her if he would take her cats and he agreed. Upon her passing he honored that request and personally took in her cats ❤️ I asked him yesterday if he needed a rescue to help and he said no - he explained that he told her that he would care for them and he is doing as he promised 😇❤️ That’s integrity.

Karen, you will be so missed my friend - save me a seat at the table 🫶
