**EDIT: ADOPTED!!** FORT LAUDERDALE, FL: 11 year old Bessie is a very loving girl who is looking for a very specific home. The most important thing to know about Bessie is that she loves people and has a no-fuss personality. But because of her medical needs, she needs to be adopted in the southern Florida area, with no other pets. (The shelter is willing to cover her medical costs!) Bessie's pool of adopters may be limited, but all she needs is ONE special person to give her a chance. And we are set on finding that person! Regardless of where you live, we desperately need your help circulating Bessie's story. PLEASE SHARE!
Abandoned Pet Rescue wrote, "Bessie was found as a stray on December 12, 2016 with another dog who we believe was her son. The other, younger dog was adopted quickly, but Bessie has been waiting for a home for more than three years.
Bessie is a total love bug who keeps her sense of humor when silly humans dress her up! She loves getting attention, although she is shy when you first meet her. At 11 years old, Bessie still enjoys rolling in the sunshine. She is so sweet and really is such an easygoing and no-fuss dog on a daily basis. She goes work with one of our volunteers every Monday and is such a good girl who is content to lay by his side all day in his office. Bessie does a little bunny hop when she greets people, especially those who give her her favorite homemade pumpkin treats made by one of our staff members.
Bessie needs a home with no other cats or dogs. She doesn't lunge at other dogs on walks; nor does she pay them any attention when they walk past her kennel, but we have seen her try to bite other dogs when we tried socializing her so we feel a home where she is the only pet is best. She was used for breeding her whole life so she probably is reacting to dogs out of fear when another dog gets too close. She has only shows pure love towards people and is great with all the children she meets. There is a 7-year-old boy who is her best friend and has come to the shelter for years with his father to walk Bessie. The boy's family would have adopted Bessie is a minute, but where they live doesn't allow the Pit Bull breed. Ugh!
Bessie is diagnosed with Irritable Bowl Disease and Addison's Disease, which can flareup so she is on a strict diet and takes medicine. With proper care, Bessie needs to go outside to potty on a regular schedule like any dog.
She would be adopted as a "Medical Adoption" meaning Abandoned Pet Rescue would continue to cover her food and medicine and offer the best care possible within the shelter's ability. She needs to be adopted to a home in South Florida where the adopter can bring her back to APR for her routine bloodwork every 90 days, and they would have to be comfortable giving her injectable medicine or bring her to the shelter for staff to do so.
For Bessie to have the smoothest transition into a home without stressing her fragile body, APR is hoping anyone who wants to adopt her will spend some time walking her and letting her get comfortable before taking her home because stress can cause her IBD and Addison's to flair up."
