A highly recommended read, researchers delve into the history of ornamental aquaculture in Europe, analysing the benefits and drawbacks of tropical freshwater fish imports over the decades. Sections on different groups of fishes from Characidae to guppies, and also looking at legislative impacts on the trade, not just in Europe but globally including Indonesia, India, USA and others.

Ornamental aquaculture and fishkeeping are very popular with millions of enthusiasts worldwide. The number of newly imported fish species for ornamental purposes grew slowly from World War I until the 1980s. It then exponentially increased until now with more than 7900 species and a large number of scientifically undescribed morphotypes.

Here we present the first comprehensive review of freshwater and brackish fish importations during the boom of ornamental fish keeping at the turn of the Millennium and discuss this with a cultural and socio-economic lens in the European context. The increase in imports accelerated following the availability of air transport and the end of the Cold War. From the list of traded species, the largest number of species imported for ornamental purposes was found in the following groups: armored loricariid catfish (family Loricariidae), cory catfish (family Callichthyidae, subfamily Callichthyinae), cichlids of African Great Lakes (order Cichliformes), killifish (egg-laying species of the order Cyprinodontiformes), and characids (order Characiformes). These taxa represent ca. 74% of all fresh and brackish water ornamental fish species. The species of fish with the ability to absorb atmospheric oxygen (e.g., Belontidae, including gouramis and bettas) have dominated the market, but their ratio to the other species has declined during the modern era of ornamental aquaculture (after the end of WWI).

By identifying the most popular aquarium species traded through the history of the aquarium trade, our findings aim to guide present-day management of ornamental aquaculture and better inform invasion risk assessments.

Each group is indicated by a specific colour. The size of the circle indicates the total number of imported species until that year. The outer circle represents the ratio of species that are able to absorb atmospheric oxygen (dark grey) versus species that are not (pale grey). This ratio is also given above in %.

The first clinical trial of zebra danio embryos acting as cancer โ€œavatarsโ€ will start soon. The clinical trial set to begin this month in Portugal is the first randomized trial in which patients will receive drugs that have been tested beforehand in zebrafish embryos implanted with the patientโ€™s cancer cells. The fish implanted with tumour cells could help oncologists quickly personalize cancer treatments.

Lake Reminders for Summer

Fish Advisories
- The fish in Crowley Lake and Topaz Lake contain mercury, which can be harmful if too much builds up in your body over time.
- Pregnant women and children: Eat only 1 serving of Crowley Lake trout or perch per week.
- Other adults: Limit to 2 servings of these fish per week.
- It is safest to eat only skinless fish fillets.
- See https://oehha.ca.gov/advisories/crowley-lake for full safe consumption advisories.

Harmful Algae Blooms
- Algae blooms making the water toxic are becoming more common in hot months, especially at Crowley Lake.
- Contact with toxic algae water can cause skin rashes and eye irritation.
- Never drink water with visible algae blooms - it's dangerous for people and pets.
- When "Danger" signs are posted, clean fish well, discard guts, and wash fillets before cooking.
- Check for warning signs at Crowley Lake posted by LADWP.
- For bloom updates, visit the Lahontan Water Board's water quality site: https://www.waterboards.ca.gov/lahontan/water_issues/programs/swamp/ OR
LADWPโ€™s Eastern Sierra site: https://ladwpeasternsierra.com

Stay safe this summer by heeding all posted advisories and avoiding contact with algae blooms in the water. Enjoy fish from local lakes in moderation based on consumption guidelines.

The Bishop Paiute Tribe would like to invite the Tribal Community to the Pupfish Release Ceremony in the COSA area on Sunday April 21st, 2024. For the first time in history the Owens Pupfish species will be introduced to the Fish Refuge Pond in the COSA area on the Bishop Paiute Indian Reservation, in an effort to assist with the re-growth of this once flourishing native fish species.

This has been a effort that has taken over a decade to reach this milestone in the project. The Bishop Paiute Tribe would like to acknowledge our Environmental Director, Brian Adkins, and the many others who worked to get this project to implementation.

we hope to see you there!
