Jamie Ianello: Lead the Leash

Jamie Ianello: Lead the Leash Dog training, rescue and behavior from the dogs point of view. We understand your dogs are more then just a pet, they are a member of your family.

The first step to keeping dogs out of shelters and in loving, happy homes is understanding and education. All to often dogs are given up because of easily fixable behaviors that stem from a lack of understanding of their needs and behavior. Whether it is the process of where to get your new dog from, simple puppy mishaps or serious fear or aggression issues, Jamie can help guide you with the infor

mation and techniques it takes to help you and your dog live harmoniously together. Every dog has a unique personality and disposition; as a result each dog needs to be trained differently. Jamie developed a reward based training program specifically designed for each individual dog-owner team. She prides herself on keeping a strong, personal and professional relationship with our clients and is available every step of the way. Jamie will treat you as a part of her family.

This is absolutely horrible. As a rescuer who adopts out many, many dogs, it is so important to be extremely cautious when adopting dogs out to homes with children. And I am. No matter how badly we want to give a dog a chance, we cannot put the safety of a child in question. Living in reality with the dog’s behavior is paramount along with transparency. So sad for the family and poor child. The horror, I cannot imagine.

This dog has previously bitten this child. There were signs leading up to this, no doubt. Why weren’t they recognized? Why wasn’t there something done to protect this child and this dog? What happened between that bite and now that made the parents think it was okay to keep the child and dog in the same household, let alone share space?

I have so many things to say about this but I’ll boil it down. Parents, caregivers, rescuers etc. must be smart when it comes to recognizing dogs are not safe around children or have proven to be triggered by something a child may do. You must be strong and make decisions based on safety of your child and dog, not based on your emotions. You cannot make excuses for the dogs behavior but rather you need to recognize the reality of what the dog is showing you. You need to reach out to a dog behavior professional to discuss what is actually going on.

You cannot take chances with poor, sweet innocent children. Our dogs deserve advocates who are based in reality. Our children deserve to be safe around our dogs. This is senseless and so terribly sad.
