My artistic representation:
This nice young tom tipped the scales at 108 pounds. Most are aware cats seem to always present a difficult challenge. Out of respect and honor I always strive to accurately portray the size and maturity of all gods creatures. Preserving memories, yet allowing the animal to live in a lasting, respectful image. An image I myself would want to be remembered.
My good friend, artist, in a recent posted stated ‘in order to create a masterpiece, you have to surrender your physical being as the tools, to your conscious creative being.’ This perspective mirrors my experience with creating commissioned art for others, where the line between artistic merit and commercial viability often blurs. The piece I’m presenting, which spanned several weeks and untold hours, illustrates this point. While it could have been ‘completed’ in a mere 14 hours, doing so would have compromised the cat’s image, underscoring the tension between artistic vision and timely completion.

It’s been a season for cat rugs, amazing to see!! With the increase in game population over the west over the last 8 years brought a significant increase in predator numbers. With the immediate decrease in game numbers due to drought, harsh winters and disease. The cats being killed now are in the worst shape I’ve seen. Minimal amounts of food sources, virtually zero fat and empty stomachs. When FWP decides the game numbers are high and instates an inititave to decimate their numbers, unacounting of natural issues. Their response still needs to reflect the predator quotas. With abundant nutrition brings larger, healthier litters exploding the predator population. Especially what is normally a ghost species, which I believe is why there is a large amount of unusual spotting this year, cats being forced out of their general hunting grounds. I’m not even saying kill a cat just to save 45 deer a year. Because ultimately killing predators and saving those game animals to what a person thinks will help the game will just result in putting unreasonable, and unsustainable amounts of tags in pockets. I would rather see a healthy, reflective population of predators out making a living, compared to what’s occurring now.

Mascot for Montana's big game population.
People have asked me what could be a solution for the drastic drop in population, of which I think are down over 90% from 4 years ago. My opinion on a solution? we as people, hunters, lovers of wildlife need to have morals. Why do people complain about the government, yet when there’s an instance like this people look for them to impose regulations to solve the problem. Personanlly I hate regulations. Why is it so hard to just have morals and respect for the animals, instead we slaughter everything living or breathing just because a tag is possessed.
Elk numbers at an all time low? Draw a cow elk tag, you feel obligated to go fill it? It’s not about the meat because we can buy half a beef for what that hunts going to cost you to find one in the Missouri breaks right now. Everyone that has partaken in the shoulder season hunt over the past 10 or so years since it’s been implemented are just as big of part of the problem as out of staters or anything else that’s going on, simply big brother gave the green light.
It’s also comparable to the gun agenda, guns don’t kill people, people kill people. Tags don’t kill herds off, the people, long season, long winters, and extreme droughts do.
